It can be scary when you first realize that your alcohol or drug use has gotten out of control, or when a loved one's use is starting to affect you in negative ways. You see how drug and alcohol use can impact different areas of your life, including things like your job and your relationships with your friends and family. Reaching out for help for the first time can be difficult, fearing that once you share the truth with someone you will be given nothing but judgment in return.

If you have found yourself in the midst of feeling lost, anxious, depressed, grieving a loss or just needing to talk to someone, please call me and make an appointment today. I believe one of the purposes in my life is to sit with those suffering through their humanity and to let them know they’re not alone but a part of a larger self. I believe grace meets us where we are but doesn’t leave us there. I want my clients to be able to embrace and learn from their weak days to help them get stronger and transform into the best versions of themselves. “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” -Carl Jung

I strive to create a space that is accepting, nonjudgmental, and authentic where individuals feel open to share the pain, confusion and frustrations they are facing. The process of building connection, validating clients experiences while exploring different perspectives, and working to find practical tools that the client can use to navigate the obstacles in their lives. The good news is that you are thinking about making a change. It is ok if you are not sure. I help clients sort through their reasons for making a change and for staying the same. We work together to uncover what is holding you back. In this process there are often images, myths or dreams that show up and that help guide change process. I encourage and support clients to explore the hidden gifts found in the shadow places in their lives and help them shed light on the purpose of old patterns before replacing them with something new and more effective.

Are you confused about why you are feeling the way you are feeling? Do you wish things were different? Are you feeling disconnected from others or yourself? Current neuroscience and research tells us that about 90 to 95 percent of the way we think, feel, and act is unconscious and automatic. In my practice, I help people understand why they are acting, feeling, and thinking they are so they can begin change their internal reality. I partner with my client’s to educate and empower them to understand themselves better so they can begin to live more intentionally and pursue their passions in meaningful ways.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
