Hello, I am J. Claire Abernathy. I have focused on supporting people dealing with a wide range of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression , family relationships, grief and loss, trauma, and adjustment. I also have experience treating substance use disorders and supporting persons in recovery. I work with the LGBTQ+ community.
I believe in an authentic and caring therapeutic relationship, coupled with evidence-based treatments, as the strong foundation for success. My approach focuses on identifying clients existing strengths and increasing their capacity to cope with stress. I strive to create a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space to facilitate change and healing.
My style is insight and feedback oriented interpersonal therapy. I incorporate many theoretical approaches to treatment to match my client's needs. I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Towson University in 1989 and received her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland in 1994.
