In Psychotherapy, it is the relationship between the patient and the therapist that allows for the patient to search for understanding into the nature of their difficulties. It is within the safety, confidentiality and understanding acceptance that the patient is encouraged to reveal intimate parts of themselves that allow the therapist to identify characteristic problems and patterns of behavior. Seemingly unexplainable behavior, thought patterns and symptoms turn out to have identifiable meanings beyond the awareness of the patient. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is aimed at personality changing goals and symptom relieving efforts. The patient is always in control of the therapeutic process.
Psychotherapy differs from other forms of therapy because it takes the patient into a deeper level of understanding about mental processes which impact our feelings, motivation and patterns of behavior. While there is a focus on current situations there are also unconscious factors and forces that are temporarily blocked from our consciousness.
I work with a wide variety of issues and personality disorders. I also have extensive training and experience with LBGTQ related issues, including but not limited to areas related to questioning, sexual orientation and gender identity, coming-out, family relationships, generational differences, multiple-minority identities, workplace issues, and transitioning.
