*Accepting new clients*- It can be lonely and overwhelming to find ourselves in emotional struggle. The therapeutic relationship is unique and one that I deeply trust. It's instrumental to have a companion and guide as we traverse these unchartered inner landscapes. The pain we feel invites us on a transformative journey from obscurity to clarity. It's so tempting to contract when we are challenged, but it's critical to soften and trust into the process. This movement through our pain rearranges us into an expanded version of ourselves. I bring the qualities of warmth, openness, and curiosity to this transformative work together.

Hello, and welcome! Life can be very challenging and overwhelming at times. I know and I get it. For some, we tend to try to solve our problems on our own and reaching out for help is out of the question; sometimes it works. If you haven't been able to solve it on your own, I would love to meet you, and together we can create ways towards hope and begin the healing process. I believe that therapy can assist you by helping to identify what has worked in the past, what you already have within that you can draw upon in helping to obtain what you are hoping for in life.

My primary approach is based on family systems. Our values, relationships, and self-image are impacted by our culture and family and it can take time and empathy to understand their impact. Therapy may take the form of structured behavioral therapy, or of a free flowing existential conversation with the goal of helping you become centered with the awareness of the forces that surround you and the ability to understand and cope with them. I will provide a calm, non-judgmental, compassionate and supportive atmosphere in which you can learn and explore. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your story.

I expect a client to have some real issues, why else would they seek out help. Ideally they still have some hope that things can get better. Not too much anger but we will deal with that and importantly that they are willing to share what is real about their feelings and experiences. My ideal client finds that they can change things and that they can accept that bad things sometimes happen. In the end they finish therapy feeling confident that life is good and that they can handle what ever comes along.

Are you feeling stuck where you are currently? Often, how we present to the world is driven by how we learned to survive in it. At our core, we seek to feel seen, heard, loved, and valued. However, our own beliefs that we are unworthy or undeserving of these basic desires lead us to feel anxious or depressed, lonely, disconnected, misunderstood or overwhelmed. Such beliefs about ourselves are built on years of messaging that tell us who we "should" be and bring us further away from who we are at our core. By exploring these beliefs, we can work together to heal and to bring you closer to your truest, most authentic self.

As a therapist, I believe in being genuine, respectful and empathetic. For a therapeutic relationship to develop, clients need to feel seen and understood. I strive to help my clients understand their own emotions, cope with difficult feelings, improve their relationships with themselves and the people they care about. Years ago, as a beginning therapist, I was influenced by research showing that the critical therapeutic element in psychotherapy, regardless of the discipline, was the relationship between the therapist and the client. Contemporary research confirms the importance of relationship in fostering therapeutic change.

I enjoy working with individuals who are motivated to become the best version of themselves. I want to walk alongside you and assist you in your own personal development. I believe that my role is to assist in facilitating your healing journey, provide feedback and encouragement, and allow for educational opportunities; however, you're doing the actual work of changing behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. I provide services outside of my full-time job and only see clients during the evenings, weekends, and holidays. I will get to know you as an individual and we will work from there!

Therapy is something you have probably contemplated for awhile. It takes a lot of courage to work on tough issues that are making your life less fulfilling than you have envisioned. People seek counseling for different reasons. It can be something from your past that you feel it is time to work on or help finding your direction and motivation to reach your goals. I work with you to overcome whatever blocks are in the way of living the life you want to live. The important thing is to bring more joy into your life.

My treatment approach derives from an accumulation of lived experience, extensive education, and post-graduate internships. This gathering of knowledge has provided me with the inner wisdom to help guide my clients toward clarity and greater emotional intelligence. This is done through a curious and compassionate examination of the self, and ways in which we have allowed our past to define us. I work from a strengths-based and relational model, meaning that trust must be established first before we can “do the work.” I am not keen on diagnosis, but use them instead, as a guide towards how I can best serve you. I specialize in treating all forms of anxiety, including social anxiety, agoraphobia, specific phobias (e.g. spiders, flying, heights, driving), and panic disorders. In addition, I have extensive experience guiding parents toward more connected relationships with their children. I especially enjoy working with new moms and parents of toddlers. I also have a special interest helping individuals increase their self-esteem by helping you identify your strengths, increase your level of confidence, and create positive, healthy goals for yourself.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer Employee Assistance Plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.

What is an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP)?

Employee Assistance Plans are purchased by employers for the benefit of their employees. EAPs typically assist employees with referrals and may also provide the first few sessions of therapy free of charge, with the patient's regular health insurance kicking in after those initial sessions. EAP benefits often apply to all types of therapy without the need for a medical diagnosis, making it easier to access couples therapy, therapy for life transitions, and other non-medical counseling. Just as with standard health insurance, clients should always check that a provider accepts their EAP benefits before scheduling.
