Life is complicated. You may be feeling lost or overwhelmed right now. Having someone to talk to may be the difference between overcoming your challenges or letting them dictate your life. I work to create a warm, welcoming, and respectful environment so you can focus on finding solutions and having the life you want. Many of my clients, individuals and couples, are working on relationship and sexual issues. I also have experience working with people who are recovering from the trauma of physical illness and concerns.

I will help manage your struggle with mental illness and will help you through the normal stressors that often accompany transitions in life. The hurt you feel after a separation. I believe providing a safe space allows clients the opportunity to fully explore their emotional pain and discover ways to bring about healing.
Discover a life full of hope, healing and fulfillment! You have taken the first step on your journey toward living healthy and whole. Emotional wellness is an essential component of life. Many aspects of our lives are impacted by our mental health such as our relationships with family and friends, job performance, self-esteem and overall physical health. When our mental health difficulties go unaddressed, we face the risk of feeling hopeless, dissatisfied, emotionally drained and living an unfulfilled and inauthentic life. I would like to help you on your path to emotional health and wellness.

A particular specialty of mine is helping people navigate chronic illness and complex health diagnoses.
Those coming to the therapy space often find themselves seeking these two powerful experiences: acceptance and care for who we are in the moment, and nurturance and guidance for who we want to become. We all have things about ourselves and about our lives that we want to change, but perhaps feel as if we don't have the tools or knowledge to go about that change in a healthy, productive way. It is my job as a therapist to show you that you already have all the necessary knowledge and tools within you to create beneficial, lasting change; you simply need someone equipped with the right flashlight to illuminate them for you.

At PAZ Behavioral Health, PLLC, it is our belief that life is a tapestry and it is beautiful, even with its imperfections. Like a tapestry, our lives are woven differently, which makes us all unique.

I view persons as made up of emotions, thoughts, relationships, biology, and our spiritual selves. Consequently, I first help you stabilize by making necessary changes in behavior. Medical or neurological contributions and possible nutritional deficiencies are examined. I address any distorted thinking that is contributing to your emotional pain. If systems in your life (family, work, school) are a factor, they are also addressed. Finally, we work with the larger questions of existence (spiritual issues, issues of purpose/ meaning), which are all vital to mental health. All areas are dealt with from a solid grounding in scientific literature and research.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
