I specialize in treating childhood trauma, chronic pain, adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs), post-traumatic stress disorder, and codependency.
With over a decade of experience in the mental health field I have worked with clients from all walks of life. While everyone is unique in their struggles, I believe that most suffering can be alleviated by addressing root causes such as early childhood traumas, nervous system dysfunction, and family of origin wounding.

Experiencing several significant losses and dealing with my own physical health issues earlier in life served to help me recognize a deep sensitivity for the pain that people carry. As a therapist it is imperative to me that I do not ask my clients to go somewhere I am not willing to go. I seek to create spaces that are safe, welcoming and stable for client's experiencing distress from past or present. As our nervous systems have created ways to adapt and survive, I believe in the exploration and healing from the deepest parts of ourselves.

Life can be difficult at times, sometimes overwhelming. We may not trust ourselves to walk the path that is best for us, second-guessing and blocking our innate knowing of what is right and wrong. I work with adults, children and couples, providing a safe environment of warmth and unconditional positive regard, so that each person can have the space to discover who he or she is and what steps are needed to better manage conflicts. I work with those suffering from low self-esteem, trauma, relational and transition issues, chronic pain and addiction.

Focusing awareness on physical sensations (like chronic pain & tension), breathing, and emotions brings us into the present moment.
When anxiety and depression run wild, our relationships suffer and self confidence is eroded. I help Individuals restore wholeness and safety; especially after a trauma from long ago, or just yesterday. I also work with individuals longing for deeper connection and joy in their personal and work relationships. I blend body-based approaches, mindfulness and hypnotherapy to offer tangible tools for staying healthy and grounded; especially when life's running us and lacks vitality.

The world can be deeply cruel to many people, so I use a feminist and social-justice lens to understand the link between the nature of a person's pain and the oppressive systems they live within.
People often come to therapy with a precise problem to address, and sometimes people come to therapy with a general sense that they are not living their lives in a way that feels right or true. Therapy is useful in many circumstances; it’s an opportunity to understand and change painful patterns, to treat a mental health disorder, to heal from previous trauma, to process the impact of oppression, to mobilize oneself when feeling “stuck," and so much more. Whatever your reason for seeking treatment, I believe that therapy can help you create a life that holds more joy, connection, and purpose.

If you find yourself repeating old patterns in relationships, suffering from past trauma, or navigating the world as a queer, trans, or otherwise marginalized person, the right trauma and sex therapist could be the missing member of your support team. I specialize in working with clients who are processing trauma, exploring gender and sexuality, living with chronic pain and disability, and more. As a queer and nonbinary person, I understand the importance of shared identity with a therapist, and work to foster a safe space for LGBTQIA+, kinky, and nonmonogamous folks to bring their full selves into the therapy room.

TESTIMONIAL. Prior to meeting Pamela Goffman I was desperately seeking a psychotherapist who could help me with my deep depression and feelings of emptiness and loneliness. For a period of five years I counseled with four different therapists to seek peace in my life. My life was a mess during my five year search, I had hit rock bottom. It had to be divine intervention that lead me to Pamela Goffman. While the four previous therapists talked me through my immediate issue(s), Pamela quickly identified the core of my pain and we began our journey of healing together.

Anxiety, depression, and unprocessed trauma have been keeping you trapped. You want to thrive and feel like your life is moving in a better direction, that you have a purpose and that you’re no longer cycling through patterns that have only caused you more pain. You’re tired of feeling like you are going around in circles, feeling “stuck” but you're not exactly sure why or what to do. Maybe you can’t remember the last time you weren’t feeling anxious, exhausted, or doubting yourself. You’re curious about what a life full of intention, joy, and peace could be like but aren’t sure how to get there. I hear you; it’s time to transform.

My specialties include: sexuality/gender identity development, LGBTQIA+, emerging adulthood, young adults, trauma, survivors of sexual violence, kink/BDSM, non-traditional relationship and family structures, family of origin concerns, chronic health and pain concerns, sex work(ers), radical fat liberation, and positive body esteem development.
I utilize an eclectic, psychoanalytic, and relational approach while employing a strong racial justice, feminist, and queer theory lens. We help people with depression, anxiety, and relationship pain.
With 50 years of experience, Therapy Center of Philadelphia offers a healing space that is accessible, deep, and lasting. We do this by meeting you fully in your experience and identity. We pay attention to the therapy relationship and de-emphasize diagnosing people. We consider systemic oppression (racism, misogyny, anti-queerness, cissexism) as a form of trauma and explore this as part of the healing work. All of our therapists strive to be trans-affirming and we offer support around medical transition. Serving adult women and trans communities, our therapy services are offered on a sliding fee scale and without treatment limits.

I have experience helping with depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, chronic pain and illness.
Sometimes we look around and life is not the way we want it to be: full of disappointment, stress, sadness or loss. Sometimes we need help finding our way. In my practice, I seek to create a compassionate, supportive space for collaborative exploration, growth and positive change. I create a place where you can be seen and acknowledged, and you can give words to feelings and experiences, to discover greater understanding and self- awareness. When we understand our patterns of behaviors and feelings, we can free ourselves of the unwanted burdens that weigh us down, and live more fully and happily in the present.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
