As many of my clients struggle with chronic pain, I help to identify and address the many physical and emotional layers that can be involved in learning to manage these issues.
At some point in life, many of us struggle with a loss of joy and purpose in response to challenges such as pain, illness, trauma, life transitions, and other major stressors. I can help you stop fighting yourself and create a more peaceful and meaningful life. I see therapy as a dialogue, with us exploring together what works and is important for you. As a skills-based, solution-focused therapist, my clients often find that our work helps them better understand themselves and their patterns, and develop new, more effective ways of coping with challenges.

When our sense of safety is shattered or we find ourselves fragmented rather than whole, we can feel trapped and helpless. We may feel unable to move forward into a world that feels overwhelming or unsafe. The story we are living can feel like one of scarcity and survival rather than one of security and celebration. Counseling offers you the space to explore your story in the context of a secure relationship and discern how to write the next chapter of your story with courage and confidence.

I am particularly focused on stress management and the use of hypnosis and mindfulness to aid individuals in increasing relaxation, reducing pain and anxiety as well as improving satisfaction with themselves and the life choices they are making.
People come to treatment for a variety of reasons.I view each person as unique and strive to assist individuals to overcome challenges and meet the goals that are important in their lives. As we work to let go of behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are not useful in the present, new healthier patterns can emerge and be adopted. Treatment is always focused on achieving a greater sense of comfort and satisfaction, psychologically, emotionally physically and spiritually.

I have over twenty years’ experience working with individuals and families in trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, illness, parenting, and much more.
At some point, you may find yourself in need of a little extra support. Maybe someone non-judgmental to listen to you and to hear what you have to say. Perhaps you need a safe space to process something with a therapist who can help you find your own answers. If you are feeling out of control or if you are struggling with life’s challenges, seeking help is an excellent way to start the process of healing. Together, however, we can work collaboratively to identify and reach your goals to create essential changes in your life.

I welcome someone who is ready to make life changes and would like assistance to take them from where they are to where they want to be. A willingness to work with a supportive, experienced (since 1979) social worker/therapist who uses dynamic and interactive approaches, knowing that I am the guide, and you are the one who knows yourself best and that healing comes from within. Relationship, self esteem, body image, career goals, family challenge, sexuality, spirituality, illness, loss, addiction, depression or anxiety related issues. I offered my first TEDx talk called Overcoming the Taboo of Touch, about platonic touch by consent.

Whether you are coming to therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, a life change, or just a general sense of unease, facing these issues can be scary. Healing isn’t easy because it involves confronting our pain and hurts. Healing can also be full of joy, hope, connection, and freedom as we experience new possibilities of being and relating. My approach is warm, relational, and integrative. I strive to offer a space where you can feel safe enough to look inward – to gently and compassionately welcome all parts of yourself with less judgment and shame.

The psychotherapy I do is depth-oriented, offered in a safe and peaceful setting, where we can build your sense of inner peace. We will uncover your family legacy, as well as the maladaptive patterns you are living that underlie your suffering. Within that context, we will practice awareness of the present moment and unhook you from the influences of the past. We can work to improve your relationships, clarify your life goals and help you find a sense of ease and confidence in yourself. If you are depressed and/or anxious, we will find the ways to release you from emotional pain and move toward personal fulfillment.

Hello! I currently have daytime availability. Please reach out via email to request a consultation: Trauma does not need to define you. You might not understand why you feel the way you do or know how to cope with the pain, confusion, anxiety, fear, anger and depression people with trauma often experience. You may not be sure how to resolve trauma and PTSD or where to start. Sometimes when we’ve been through difficult experiences, life becomes so overwhelming that we need help figuring it all out. I can help. I can help through support, education about trauma, and treatment that helps you feel better.

I also help individuals and couples navigate challenging issues like relationship ambivalence, breakups, breaches of trust, poor communication, sexual trauma, lack of intimacy, exploration of gender identity or sexual orientation, and sexual problems like inability to orgasm, pain with sex, or erectile dysfunction.
I work for The Center For Growth, treating everything from mental health to sex and relationship issues. I can help you manage thing like anxiety and depression as we explore and understand complex emotions in a safe space and find healthy and effective ways to express and release those feelings. We can immerse ourselves in exploration of your past as we make connections and gain understanding of how old patterns show up for you today. Or we can focus on the here and now, identifying what behaviors and thoughts are no longer serving you so you can create new goals that support your growth, in whatever way feels right to you.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
