You might be feeling uncertain, worried, or hopeless as you navigate difficult life transitions or the complexities of relationships-perhaps ending or beginning an academic program, vocation, or intimate partnership. You might be processing the loss of a loved one, finding it difficult to connect with your partner, or struggling to find more meaning in your life. Changes like these often turn our world upside down. I will support you in reuniting with your inner self and feeling confident in the steps you take ahead.

Beginning therapy can mean different things to different people, but it is an action of courage, hope, self- care, and self-determination. You might or might not have been to a therapist before. If this is your first experience with therapy, you might even feel a bit nervous or apprehensive and I am here to say that’s normal. Therapy is a process that allows you the freedom and privacy to discuss issues that may be sensitive or painful. They may even be difficult to discuss with your family or friends. Through our work together, you will be validated and can begin to feel more at home within yourself.

Today, the world is moving very fast, often not allowing individuals time to do self-care, self-reflection, or personal/family needs assessments. I can help you slow the pace down and focus on your individual or group needs. For others, the world is unrecognizable, adjusting has become complex, and adaptation has proven complicated. My role is to help you find yourself and your strengths amid life, emotional, psychological, relational, spiritual, and physical challenges.

Are you feeling frustrated by bumping up against the same old struggles? Maybe you're feeling chronically overwhelmed and paralyzed with stress, desperately needing an exhale, a moment of peace. Or, you're feeling hopeless that life could ever get better and happiness seems elusive. Will I ever be good enough? Am I asking too much? Does anyone even care?! If you're here-looking for help, there's a part of you that believes change is possible. And it is. Often times, so much of what drives our behavior is hard to see on our own, deeply rooted in past wounds we've long since forgotten. Are you ready to explore and understand yourself?

I believe in the power of connection. Psychologist and researcher Brene Brown says, “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irresistible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick”. Through the course of counseling, we will work together to identify, repair, and restore the areas of ‘disconnect’ in your life, so that you may once again reap the mental and physical benefits of this fundamental human need.

Chronic illness, chronic pain, depression, or anxiety. Each of these have their own way of zapping our energy and enjoyment in life. These culprits tell us lies about ourselves and keep us from living our greatest potential. Maybe you've been faced with unforeseen circumstances, this is not the life you envisioned, and you're left wondering where to begin. It's hard to tell if or when you're making progress because life just doesn't look the same as it used to and you're left comparing yourself to others.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
