My past experience includes working with people who have chronic and persistent mental illness.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works to diagnose and treat adolescents, adults, children and families. My specialization is on chronic health conditions/chronic pain. I have learned that people with "invisible illnesses" are often overlooked and misunderstood. My goal is to help people feel heard. Throughout my experience, I have learned that everyone needs and deserves a personalized approach to their treatment and recovery. I have found that this helps individuals tremendously with their treatment and I strive to provide that for you.

I work with individuals who suffer from physical, mental, and emotional pain.
Life can be both painful and challenging, but that does not mean that you have to go through it alone. Therapy is often a great place to start (or continue) when we are in need of some extra support.

Reaching out for help can be scary. I aim to make that process a smooth one with support and encouragement. I am a Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience as a therapist. My clients come to me with a wide range of concerns, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, illness in themselves or a loved one, and much more. What I see time and time again that they have in common is a feeling of powerlessness. Whether it be over their symptoms, their family members, relationships and even themselves. I help them to understand themselves and their circumstances more fully.

Therapy is a space to feel safe in your pain while gaining awareness and learning strategies to build a meaningful life. Are you feeling overwhelmed and under resourced? Does it feel like you can’t get your feet under you? Are you struggling with feeling alone and isolated? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in the right place. While suffering is inevitable, there is a path forward. It is true that the work is up to you, but there is no reason to do it alone. Your emotions are yours – and by virtue of being emotions, they are coming from a valid and worthwhile place.

Areas of specialization include: depression, anxiety, relationship issues, women's issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), adjustment issues, separation and divorce, addiction and recovery, co-dependency, ACOA, chronic illness, cancer patients and their families, aging, job stress and bereavement.
I view therapy as a collaborative process that facilitates communication, problem-solving and self-exploration, which leads to lasting change in relationships and life. As a clinical psychologist in practice for over 27 years, I have learned that while no single type of therapy works for everyone, a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential to achieving growth and change. We use this relationship to learn about how you feel and behave in other significant relationships. Therapy becomes a place to try new ways of communicating and to develop new ways of seeing things. Ultimately, therapy leads to taking healthy risks in relationships and life.

No matter the changing weather of your soul, no matter the pain, fear, and stuckness, there is, perhaps, no better thing than to be curious about yourself, and motivated to step outside your own box. You are far more than a collection of problems; you LIVE, and your life has intertwined with those of many others, helping create both. Lean in, explore...in the process, you will become more truly yourself. Become more creative, freer to love, and in touch with what matters to you. I'll help make therapy a different, positive kind of relationship, in which you can discover and apply your personal truth to a better life.

Some of the conflicts that we all most commonly experience, for example are: marital, premarital and parenting issues, death and dying, anxiety, depression, "feeling stuck", sexuality, intimacy, incest and sexual abuse, chronic illness and/or pain, post traumatic stress disorders, and school based problems, among others.
My practice, although eclectic, is deeply rooted in a family systems approach incorporating the exploration of the individual's roles and behaviors from both the past and present that influence various current and/or repetitive unwanted behaviors. My belief in working through the therapeutic process, by implementing a systems modality, is to work with clients to help them in the process of change for a more positive, productive and healthier life. I treat families, couples, individuals, children and groups as needed in a compassionate and caring environment to address many of the aforementioned issues.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
