As a Somatic Therapist, I believe that everyone has within them an inner wisdom and inner healing power that is their natural birthright. My role is to help create the environment for that inner genius to arise and find itself. When this is done, new meaning, purpose and life narratives can be discovered and lived out. I have wide experience assisting individuals in managing a variety of behavioral and emotional concerns including trauma, chronic pain and health issues, difficult life transitions, weight management, anxiety, depression, and stress management.

I'm currently accepting new client appointments and have immediate availability. Do you or someone you know struggle with pushing away big emotions? There are many people who try to avoid painful feelings and thoughts. Avoiding and ignoring painful emotions feels good in the moment and can help you survive trauma. However, if you continue to ignore emotional pain, your body can store that pain. As a result, you may feel numb or easily overwhelmed. Avoidance can become addictive, diminish your tolerance, and can lead to you choosing harmful methods to cope with stressors.

I know what it's like to search for a therapist who understands attachment issues, chronic illness and caregiver stress and for ones who can incorporate faith in their practice.
Parenting a child with special needs or an adopted child who has experienced trauma requires extraordinary strength. Care-giving for aging parents presents similar demands that intensify our need for a listening ear and access to resources. If you are in the midst of the tension between managing a child or parent's medical and emotional needs while equipping him/her to independently provide as much self-care as possible, you could use some serious encouragement. The internal conflict that arises as you meet -- and fail to meet -- the parenting/care-giving challenge(s) is an experience not meant to be faced alone.

Every person I serve has a unique story. While some clients experience challenges in just one area, most experience difficulty multiple areas (mental health, trauma, loss, addiction), creating a complex, vicious cycle if not all parts are addressed. The circumstances that bring someone to therapy do not come in 'neat little packages.' I enjoy sorting out the pieces with each client, getting to the root of the issue, and offering a combination of evidence-based therapeutic interventions that help clients finally begin to experience relief, and start living a happier, more fulfilled life.

Change can be difficult for many people but wanting to feel better is a start. I believe that challenges lead to growth and an opportunity to live a more fulfilling life. Common reasons for seeking therapy include difficulty adjusting to life changes and transitions, dissatisfaction in significant relationships, coping with traumatic life experiences, and difficulty managing feelings. I work with individuals and groups to lessen the impact of trauma; develop healthy boundaries and coping skills; improve relationships and communication skills; and increase self-esteem/self-acceptance.

Congratulations on embarking upon the next step in your journey! Each of these steps — every experience of bliss, fear, frustration, or sorrow — have all lead you to this very moment. The challenges and complexities of your day-to-day life may have lead you here. The traumas, losses, and heartaches of the past have, too. And while I would rather that each of us would be spared these experiences — it is my hope that I may have a chance to partner alongside you as you grow and, ideally, heal from each of them.

Hi, I'm Katie! I help women and girls thrive in their relationships while living boldly and authentically. So often we can feel stuck, especially in relationships - friendships, romantic relationships, or with family members. Maybe you are exhausted from giving so much of yourself to avoid conflict, or you are so focused on what other people think about you that you neglect yourself. Deep down, you don't believe your feelings and needs matter as much as other peoples'. Maybe you are a mother who sees her daughter struggling with anxiety and low self-worth. You want to see her thriving, but you don't know how to get her there.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
