Therapy is not magic, research and common experience tells us its mostly about finding another human you feel safe enough with to look at all the unloved and unintegrated parts of ourselves that are causing suffering and preventing us from expressing our potential. Successful therapy often requires that we unlearn lesions form the past, make way and reflect on new experiences in the present, and find ways to accept and integrate all the parts of ourselves and our collective consciousness

My passion for helping others to realize their dreams and overcome the obstacles caused by trauma, anxiety, grief, poor self-image, addictions and a myriad of other difficulties has led me to learn how closely associated emotional anguish can be with physical pain. In a warm and loving environment, I guide my clients one step at a time toward reaching their goals. I also utilize a variety of other approaches when indicated including CBT, DBT, and Narrative Therapy. I am uniquely trained in Somatic Experiencing and in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

In my practice, I help teens and adults work through problems with insomnia, anxiety, trauma, and chronic pain.
Are you lying in bed at night with racing thoughts? Do you have trouble letting go of stress from your day? Are you having trouble falling asleep or do you wake up multiple times overnight? Are you replaying old memories from the past? Or maybe you have had chronic pain for years and you can't find relief. If you are struggling with insomnia, anxiety, trauma, or chronic pain, I am glad you're here. Dealing with these problems can be challenging but you can heal if you have the right tools. I use clinically proven techniques like EMDR, CBT for insomnia, Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), and other brain-based strategies.

I have a deep knowing and appreciation for working with grief and loss, end of life, chronic/ terminal illness and other significant life transitions.
We can't always control what life brings our way, but we can choose how we respond to it. I enjoy helping people reconnect with their natural wisdom in the midst of life's challenges. My goal is to help my clients gain awareness of what is already working in their lives and what patterns and habits have become outdated or self-defeating. A situation, problem or symptom that appears unworkable or overwhelming can offer the key to its own healing when held with gentle, inquisitive attention.

If you have been struggling with a health concern such as pain, insomnia, or GI distress, you may feel demoralized by the limitations of medical treatments for many health issues. You may not know that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a number of medical conditions. As a clinical health psychologist, I specialize in chronic illness, chronic pain, disorders of brain-gut interaction (DGBIs), health anxiety, insomnia, and stress related to navigating the health care system. Therapy can help you to quiet the brain’s natural threat response to symptoms, foster resilience, and embrace life once again.

You are not alone in this! I have been there, as a mom with an adult child coping with autoimmune illness, and years of social work with older adults and their caregivers.
Caring for others while trying to care for yourself can be one of the toughest challenges. If you are caring for a parent, spouse, child, or other loved one with medical conditions and complex needs, you may feel isolated, exhausted, overwhelmed, and unappreciated. You may even have your own health issues to manage on top of it all. Finding time for yourself is essential, but often seems impossible. Others may have unrealistic expectations and judgments they put on you. Endless medical appointments and things to remember can leave you feeling depleted at the end of the day.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
