Age, body type, limited mobility, illness, or disability is not an impediment for engaging in yoga therapy: breathing and meditation.
I am the right therapist for you if you continue to suffer with depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, grief, unhappiness and a sense of disconnection from the deeper sense of who you are. I will teach you how to feel better about your life with the skills of yoga: breath and meditation; calming your upset or sick body and quieting your constantly negative thoughts. Psychological and medical research support that Yoga, while an ancient philosophy, teaches easy to learn skills that improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. I can guide you to your heart's desire for your life.

Accepting new clients starting May 20th 2024! I believe that all people have their own inherent wisdom and as a counselor, I aim to support clients to embody their truest, most authentic self. I use a non-pathologizing model to support you to identify and understand your individualized needs. I find that understanding, empathy, and collaboration, with a focus on grounding in the here and now develops self compassion and acceptance. Often when we are in pain we have trouble accessing those parts of ourselves. Healing and recovery can happen within a safe and compassionate relationship and I aim to provide that container with you.

I am board certified in Rehabilitation Psychology and I have worked for three decades along side people with chronic illness and other medical conditions.
As a specialist in Rehabilitation Psychology, I most often work closely with patients who are managing complex social and medical situations. I build trust and connect with patients about their concerns, fears, and hopes. Most clients are striving to feel more connected to their community and building meaning in their lives. We can all improve in these areas and the science of psychology offers wonderful tools to accomplish these goals. I believe strongly in the power of human resilience in the face of adversity.

Are you feeling invisible? Angry about a breakup? Have you recently experienced a loss/death? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you experiencing more pain, burnout, and/or fatigue than normal? Does your adolescent need extra support? Is your family/relationship falling apart? If your answer to any of these questions is "Yes," or even if you have questions of your own, it may be time to reach out and talk through those thoughts and feelings. I would be delighted to be the person you reach out to.

Outside of relational work, I enjoy working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and chronic pain/illness, drawing from my years working in higher levels of care.
One thing I know: the quality of our relationships impacts our mental health. That’s why I work with individuals, couples, and families to explore the relationships with those that matter most in their lives. I bring a warm, nonjudgmental approach to sessions and can support you in finding where you might want to try something new to step out of the usual patterns that keep you stuck.

We can be traumatized by a diagnosis, abuse, loss, economy, illness, war, natural and man made disasters.
I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion leading to a stronger sense of Self.

I specialize in cognitive and behavioral approaches, training in substance use disorders, trauma, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and mindfulness.
I believe mental health care should be viewed just like physical health care, something we all need but in different ways at different times – sometimes an emergency needing acute care or maybe specific ailment, other times you just need a check-up and to check in.

I see my primary task as offering courage, perspective, and insight in the face of suffering, helping you discover what unique outcomes exist on the other side of the pain.
The goal of therapy isn’t to ‘feel better’, although that should be one of the outcomes. The suffering we experience is rarely a defective malfunctioning of the brain- it is in response to real challenges and is an important way to prepare ourselves for a developmental leap. When we are suffering, our brains release hormones that promote ‘neuroplasticity’, our minds begin to reexamine outdated narratives, and our relationships are challenged with the need for deeper vulnerability.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
