In addition to my general practice, I have a sub-specialty working with individuals with medical problems and chronic health conditions, including chronic pain, diabetes, hypetension, IBS, and cancer.
I have extensive experience working with a broad array of clinical issues and enjoy working with all different kinds of people. My approach to treatment is holistic, in that I draw on the intimate connection between mind and body to foster emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. My approach to therapy is collaborative, as I guide individuals through a process of self-awareness, healing, and change so that their goals become realities. I respect and honor each client's ethnicity, religion and cultural background, and strive to be authentic and honest while providing a safe and compassionate environment for change.

Treatment modalities and specialties include: CBT/DBT/narrative/solution focused therapy, tools for increased quality of communication in relationships, anxiety/burnout, healing from grief and trauma, relationship challenges, LGBTQIA+ and identity challenges, chronic illness management and support.
I am licensed in GA and MA. I specialize in anxiety and love working with other providers, healers, parents, teachers and caretakers for patients, relatives, parents, partners, etc. who are struggling with burnt out, struggling to find balance in their lives, and perhaps dealing with their own health and chronic health issues. In this field we often support and hold space for others without recognizing our own limits, exhaustion, sickness, chronic health issues, and need for love and support for ourselves. I value a space where we can partner to create boundaries, healing, and support for self.

My expertise has allowed me to work with individuals from the African Diaspora, immigrant communities, various cultures, military and those diagnosed with chronic illness.
One step, one step. So, this is a phrase I often say. I use it as a reminder that we will move forward, heal, achieve our goals one step, one moment at a time. If we feel or see ourselves slip back....we reset. We move forward again one step, one step.

As a counselor, I believe that working through issues such as depression, anxiety, co-dependency, addictions... in present time is very important, along with examining wounds from childhood that are barriers to moving forward. Through this work, healing can occur with understanding, self-compassion, authenticity, and positive change. Most people come to therapy related to feelings based on fear or pain. I provide a warm and compassionate place that allows my clients to openly share and have a voice that is respected and heard. I look forward to hearing your story.

While the journey of healing is a nebulous thing, I believe we are built to do it. We can uncover who we truly are and live out of that place with love. No matter what pain you carry, you can learn to carry it well. There are no easy answers in life and I won't try to give you them. But I will help you hold the beautiful tension of your life with confidence.

Talk therapy is not enough. My approach to therapy focuses on combining cognitive and somatic therapies to strengthen connection to self, and reduce the blocks to healing. The goal is to connect to your authenticity, and have the freedom to find positive and affirming ways to enjoy relationships with self and others. The goal is to experience life without shutting down or disconnecting, and/or using destructive behaviors to reduce pain and distress. Attaining the freedom to choose what you want for yourself, begins with taking the first step.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
