Living with chronic illness and/or chronic pain can be an invisible, isolating, and scary experience. On top of that, the way that our society is structured has all but left these areas out of the realm of psychotherapy and leaves these experiences to the field of medicine alone. If you live with chronic illness or chronic pain, you know firsthand how lacking this model is. In my therapy practice I strive to create space for all aspects of your human experience, while working with you towards the ability to feel safe in your body, access hope and a healthy sense of self, and to transform your suffering into meaning.

Speaking one's story and processing one's experience is often best done with another. I will provide a safe and compassionate space for you to grow and heal. In my experience, pain and worry decrease throughout the therapeutic process. Life becomes more fulfilling and more manageable. I believe you are your own best expert and my role is to walk alongside you in your path of growth. I am trauma-informed: utilizing mindfulness, EMDR, and somatic interventions. I have been working as a therapist since 2000. I specialize in the treatment of adolescent body image issues, self-harm, depression, anxiety, and parent coaching of teens.

I specialize in chronic pain/illness, complex trauma, sexual reclamation, and spiritual integration. As a somatic therapist, I believe that it is through working with the body and the mind together that the deepest healing is found. What if I invited you to dive as deeply into your shadows as you wish, and discover the gifts you’ve forgotten in your spirit and body? I invite you to embrace the parts of yourself that feel pain, anger, sadness, or afraid and offer them kindness, letting your emotions move in ways that are safe. I invite you to celebrate the glimmers of hope, the small moments of change, and feel proud of yourself.

I am a somatic therapist who works with chronic illness, chronic pain, and trauma.
Life can weigh us down. If you're struggling with anxiety or depression, managing a chronic illness, or feel generally disconnected, I understand how heavy that burden can feel. You deserve to feel empowered. Somatic counseling creates a mind/body connection that helps you release the weight of the past and build a new relationship with yourself. Instead of just surviving day to day, you can start living more fully and freely.

Even if you don’t feel like it at this very moment, there is part of you that knows they deserve something more, whether it’s self-compassion, healthy connections, pleasure, joy, or the chance to move from surviving to thriving. Let's get curious.

Does your happiness and self-worth yo-yo up and down depending on the current circumstances of your life? When something which you have no control over goes wrong, do you tend to blame yourself even when you know, logically, that it isn't your fault? The pain of low self-esteem and perfectionism can be hard to live with and sometimes hard to escape from. I love to work with people to improve their feelings of self-worth and lessen the pull of perfectionism.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
