Much of my practice with focuses on chronic pain/illness, using a combination of somatic processing and solution focused therapy.
The diagnosis of chronic pain or illness can create a world that is not only physically painful but often psychologically painful as well. I believe strongly in the Mind-body connection and hope that working together in a safe and non-judgmental pace we can ease some of the many anxieties, frustrations, sadness, and anger that often accompany such a diagnosis. Together we can discuss and process all of these emotions in the hopes of creating new coping skills and a new outlook on this 'new normal'.

Hi, I am Casey! I would love to help you lead a more connected, meaningful and fulfilled life. I know looking for a therapist can be overwhelming and exhausting during a time where you may be feeling like you need additional support. While working with clients, I provide warmth and containment as they learn to heal from trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, phase of life issues or whatever may bring them into my office.

I get what it's like to live with- Chronic Pain & Illness, terrible Anxiety, and being Highly Sensitive that you feel everything! I help people with these issues along with complex trauma & sound sensitivities. Connecting the dots to understand how your childhood (upbringing, trauma, stressful events, family) may be contributing to your distress today can be extremely eye opening and transformative. In session I use many deeper brain therapies. Healing and becoming a secure capable human is the goal and completely attainable! I view therapy as a collaboration and as a Mind-Body Therapist I am an active participant and guide.

Maybe you’ve been in therapy in the past, but the changes you were looking for never really happened. You've been keeping it together, but you're asking yourself, is that enough? You haven’t been able to think your way out of your past traumatic experiences and now life seems to be adding new problems to the old ones. When are things going to change? I work with people experiencing PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, grief and loss, peri menopause/menopause, aging and other life transitions. I specialize in somatic therapy, a trauma therapy focusing on body sensations to heal psychological wounds.

I have extensive experience working with depression, anxiety, severe mental illness, transitions/loss, and chemical dependency with a particular interest in childhood trauma and its impact in adulthood.
Therapy is a dynamic process where old wounds can begin to heal and new experiences can become more meaningful and fulfilling. Yes, it can be difficult and painful, but it can also be extremely rewarding and life-changing. Through insight, empathy, support, and understanding, as well as through the relationship you and I will share, I approach the therapeutic process as an avenue to explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe and trusting environment. As a result of this process, you can gain more self-awareness, which can help foster deeper connections in relationships with yourself and others.

I have a well-ventilated, large office space located above Le Pain Quotidien in Larchmont Village.
All too often struggles deplete our energy and leave us feeling down on ourselves. Through rigorous conversation and a highly supportive relationship, I help people gain the clarity and confidence needed to produce desired change. I have extensive training in postmodern therapies, which examine how dominant cultural discourses can have oppressive effects on our lives, identities, and relationships. Prior to working in private practice, I was part of UCLA's network, where I brought social justice aims to integrative models of mental health. I have many years of experience working with couples, families, youth, and adults.

I am an interactive therapist, interested in helping clients reduce symptoms of distress, usually anxiety or depression and explore with them the roots of their distress. I find whether it is addiction, eating disorders, chronic pain, or straight forward relationship issues, understanding the "why" as well as the "how" to fix it, helps the problem and symptoms subside. Clients that work with me finish therapy with a greater awareness of themselves which helps them avoid difficulties in the future as well as a host of healthy coping strategies to help get through the rough times ahead.

My special interests include health psychology - helping individuals, couples and family members coping with illness; trauma - providing prolonged exposure therapy; and couples therapy - including non-traditional relationships and divorce/co-parenting.
The reasons why people choose to go to therapy are numerous. From recent life stressors to long-term struggles with addiction, anxiety or depression, therapy can be a way to increase adaptability, happiness, coping, and overall quality of life. For some, therapy is about treating an identified problem, while others focus on personal growth and general well-being. Either way, therapy can be an important catalyst for positive change.

Together we can create a healing space that is fit to your needs, whether that is exploring your identities or coping with dysphoria, chronic illness and pain, practicing new relationship patterns, or processing the weight of oppressive systems.
As a queer, trans, chronically ill therapist, my approach to therapy centers you as the expert in the room. I believe the wisdom in your lived experience will help us collaboratively create a healing space that supports you. Most of the people I work with inhabit identities resistant to social norms primarily adolescents and adults who are transgender, non-binary, polyamorous, and or neurodivergent. I also provide support to caregivers and family members of transgender youth and other LGBTQIA+ folks.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
