I counsel on many sensitive and intimate topics. Are you struggling with marital issues, have an at-risk teen, grief, gambling, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, or a chronic illness? Is a relationship or career choice no longer serving you in a positive way? My office is a nurturing place that welcomes openness and individuality. I'm an outside the box thinker, a supporter of the LGBTQ plus community, someone who has a personal investment in your success, and can be the confidential sounding board that is difficult to find.

The power in pain is unleashed when we begin the process of learning how to look inside of ourselves and toward others we trust for healing, strength, support and answers.
Everyone on occasion feels hopeless, helpless, frustrated, confused, alone, overwhelmed or even "stuck" in life, marriage, family, work, or relationships. Sometimes you just need someone to listen and understand and hope for you, your loved ones, or your current situation when you are unable or unequipped to be able to hope for or help yourself. A crisis can be defined as any situation that comes up in your life that you do not have a support network great enough to overcome on your own. If you are feeling in over your head, and unable to make it, I have great news for you . . .

Some of the issues I can help with include life changes, trauma, gender identity, sexuality, neurodivergence, chronic illness, pain management, anxiety and depression.
A few simple words can change everything. "I love you." "You have cancer." "I want a divorce." "You're hired." "We regret to inform you..." Just like that your life has veered onto a new road, and ready or not you must either adjust or crash. Therapy can be integral to navigating life's changes and challenges. You don't have to go it alone!

Sometimes we get stuck. We may find ourselves repeating familiar patterns that, while fiercely self-protective, no longer serve us in the present moment. We may not be able to find our sense of safety and connection which can leave us feeling hopeless for a brighter future. I want to reassure you that despite what might feel like relentless suffering, there is always hope for healing. Together, we can explore ways to reconnect with the body’s innate wisdom, fostering a sense of safety regardless of past experiences. I specialize in C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD, and chronic pain.

I primarily assist clients ages 7+ with a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, grief, chronic illness, perfectionism, family conflict, life transitions, and relationship difficulties.
Hi! My name is Emily Jackson, and I am an Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC) working under the supervision of Heather Lawson, MS, LPC-S, NCC. I understand that deciding to begin the counseling process can be intimidating, so I’m glad you’re here. I am passionate about supporting people in all walks of life and helping them navigate through the challenges they are facing. Amongst other interventions, I have found that empathetically sitting with clients while they are in the trenches of life allows them to move forward in their healing journey, and I believe that a strong relationship between the counselor and client is crucial.

Right now, you may have more questions than answers, but one thing you know for sure is that you’d do anything to get your life back. You grieve for the person you used to be and find it hard to imagine yourself living a worthwhile life with this illness trying to drag you down every chance it gets. (Due to demand, I ONLY accept clients with chronic illness concerns)

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
