I specialize in working with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, chronic pain/illness, eating disorders, and/or have concerns related to relationships, parenting, family of origin, career, identity, and life transitions.
When you feel like you have too much on your plate, therapy allows you to come up for air, engage in meaningful self-reflection, and discover what you are made of and how you can be true to yourself going forward. Maybe you're struggling with recognizing and communicating your needs to others, or perhaps life is going really well and you're terrified of messing it up - I can help. My style of practice is authentic, compassionate, and straightforward, and I believe that a sense of humor goes a long way in helping people feel comfortable and connected.

My areas of interest and treatment specialties include: anxiety, depression, trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, chronic pain, health psychology, substance use, sexuality/identity questions, work/life balance, concerns or issues affecting one’s quality of life, and relationship issues.
I believe in helping individuals and couples gain insight and make behavioral changes to improve well-being. I believe empathy is important in the therapeutic alliance and I strive to create a safe space where the client(s) can feel comfortable in therapy and actively engage in treatment. With individuals, my approach to therapy is based in cognitive-behavioral theory, but also flexible and pragmatic, depending on the individual’s needs. With couples, I primarily utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, and provide strategies to enhance effective communication, strengthen trust, deepen intimacy and manage conflict.

Choosing a mental health provider can feel daunting. I approach treatment with the philosophy that the foundation for positive change begins with a strong therapist-client relationship and that individuals can find meaning and thrive even amidst life’s most challenging chapters. I am experienced in treating adults with a range of mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma, and life stressors such as relationship and work difficulties. I also specialize in helping clients and their loved ones cope with medical conditions such as pain, insomnia, and cancer, as well as other physical illnesses or disabilities.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a problem that might call for professional help, whether the problem is depression, anxiety, phobias, marital or family strife, identity crisis, coping with chronic illness, substance abuse or any problem that interferes with daily living, my fellow clinical psychologists at Commonwealth Psychological Associates and I can be of help. It takes courage to ask for help, but early treatment can keep small problems from becoming larger ones that seem unsolvable. We recognize this and through personal care, offer specialized services and modern therapies to meet your specific needs.

In therapy and coaching, our focus is on overall mental wellness and improving the mental health and mental capacity of individuals with symptoms related to anxiety, depression, trauma, race-based issues, relationships, life transitions, somatic health, weight loss, pain related issues, and weight management.
We are a group practice of licensed clinical psychologists and social workers. Collectively, we have experience covering the developmental lifespan from assessing and treating young children with behavioral and learning concerns to working with adolescents and (young and older) adult clients who have issues navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, significant life stressors, and life transitions. Our focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We work to achieve this by providing a safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing an individualized treatment plan.

I have specialized training in working with trauma, substance abuse, chronic pain and anxiety.
Now accepting new Aetna clients! Being a human can be really hard sometimes. Maybe it’s hard because there’s an area in our lives where we struggle, like in our careers or relationships. Perhaps, we’ve experienced some painful times that we haven’t fully healed from or find ourselves engaging in problematic behaviors. Whatever our struggles, I’ve found that psychotherapy can help reduce our suffering and help connect us to the joy of being alive.

I work with clients on issues such as anxiety and OCD, depression, chronic pain, hypermobility, relationship difficulties, substance use, insomnia, health anxiety/health-related concerns, and navigating life transitions.
My goal is to help clients live a full and meaningful life by coping well with stress. I integrate a flexible, person-centered approach with evidence-based practices. Specifically, I collaboratively and non-judgmentally work with clients to identify values and strengths. Together, we explore how to “open up” to difficult thoughts and emotions in order to create a more satisfying life. I use evidence-based therapies and skills, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), as well as mindfulness/relaxation-based and trauma-informed approaches.

There are so many changes in your life - both big and small - that can bring about feelings of anxiety, depression and loss. Navigating these changes can feel so overwhelming at times, sometimes beyond what you might feel capable of holding on your own. You may be in uncharted territory and wonder about the uncertainty of the road ahead. You are looking for ways to process past experiences, cope with the present, and manage future challenges. I offer a space to express the thoughts and feelings you might not feel comfortable sharing with friends and family. I work from a compassion-focused, strengths-based approach.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
