Therapy is not just a space to work out problems, it is also a haven as one celebrates achievements and integrates change. It is your space to be authentically you with a journey partner in a relationship that supports you. My perspective is unique and informed by a dynamic background that includes lessons from a great teacher, life, as well as from serving in various roles in employment fields. I have experience working with individuals and groups in a manner that respects differences, honors experiences, and welcomes exploration.

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist based in Brooklyn, NY working with adolescents, adults, and couples. While therapy looks different for every person I work with, I believe it must always begin with a relationship that is honest and nonjudgmental, that is affirming, and that takes care of the tender parts of us while also attending to the need for growth and evolution. As a queer Jew, my practice is rooted in a psychodynamic, liberatory framework and I work from a developmental and sociopolitical lens. Many folx I work with struggle with marginalization, trauma, depression, anxiety, eating/body image and issues in relationships.

Living in New York City can often feel like a balancing act with no end in sight. We aspire to have the best career, partner, family, and friends, all while silencing the part of us that questions our choices and whether we really measure up. As obligations continue to grow, it can be hard to find the energy and motivation to do the things we have to do without sacrificing the things we want to do. That’s where I come in. I can help you to define and break through the barriers that block you from being yourself. I strive to provide a culturally sensitive environment where you can explore their relationships, careers, and identity.

Congratulations! By exploring therapy you are taking the first step toward a more enjoyable, meaningful life. Anxiety, relationship problems, past trauma, even positive job or life changes can weigh us down so that we lose sight of the true joys that surround us. We make the best choices we can as we try to solve our problems and live our lives; but sometimes, we forget that we learned those problem-solving skills long ago and that there might be a better way. Together we will work to solve your problems, face challenges and improve your quality of life.

You haven't felt good for awhile now, something's not quite right. People around you think you're a rock star but inside you feel like a complete impostor. The negative self-talk has gotten so loud inside of your head that you are mentally and physically exhausted. Putting on a happy face for others while inside your head feels like it is about to explode. You wish you could make changes but you are not sure how. Somewhere along the line, you lost your joy and you have lost your voice, you have lost yourself. You are not happy in your relationships. You are afraid to speak your truth. You are aching to feel good again.

Alyssa is a relationship therapist who helps individuals & couples reconnect with themselves and each other through healing complex trauma, grief, chronic anxiety & toxic relationship patterns. I help clients slow down from their busy lives that leave little space to breathe or make choices with clarity, often clouded by an anxious street of thoughts or floating numbly with disconnection while over-scheduling to avoid pain. We explore and shift how expectations and circumstances may come at the expense of clarity and fulfillment from a safe foundation of connection that promotes safe communication, growth and healing.

The most important aspect of successful therapy is a trusting relationship between client and therapist. To that end I strive to foster an environment that is safe, reliable, and non-judgmental in which no subject, thought, or emotion is barred from talking about. My approach is based in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which means in session, while we start in the present, we also explore how past experiences and unconscious processes may influence our current emotions and behaviors. I also incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness elements, depending on the specific needs and preferences of each client.

Transitions are triggers, and when you are in the midst of a major life transition, it is easy to lose yourself when so much is going on around you. How do you cope when others are asking for so much from you? How can you make space for your own needs when you might not even be sure what they are? Even small tasks can feel burdensome if you are struggling to find a sense of inner peace.

Bérengère has a deep desire is to give individuals room to share their “broken pieces;” their scars, stories, experiences, perspectives, and struggles. She longs for them to consider: what does beauty look like for them? How can she help them envision a future laced with hope? She aims to walk alongside clients with gentleness and non-judgment, while offering and providing necessary tools and strategies aimed to shift belief systems and behaviors that aim to bring them harm; this is done with her unyielding belief that everyone has a story worthy of being heard, made sense of, and transformed.

Things are not going the way you want. Maybe you're having the same struggles you've had before. You're stressed, anxious, unhappy. You have many responsibilities, you're frustrated, under so much pressure. But, at the end of the day, you don't have the relationship or life you want. It seems easier for other people. You may be feeling alone or lonely. It eats away at your confidence. In private you might question your self-worth, think you're not good enough. Maybe others think you have it all together, or they rely on you. It is especially confusing if you are successful in other areas. You are used to fixing things on your own.

Hi, I'm Debra Rice a licensed therapist with over 15 years of experience. I'd like to know more about everything that's been going on, and how you've been dealing with it. My clients say I'm a great listener, and that our work together has helped them to feel supported, and to see a path forward that they hadn't seen before. I know it can be hard to see positive things when things aren't going so well, but I'm going to help you see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, the place you're in right now is temporary, and I'm here to help you find the path forward.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
