I use somatic therapy and imagery in the context of traditional talk therapy to help people recover from trauma, attachment issues, depression, and anxiety; I also work with illness and chronic pain.
Most of the clients I see have a history of trauma—physical or sexual abuse, neglect, or developmental trauma, which is the residue of dysfunctional caregiving. I believe strongly that people are naturally inclined to heal; our bodies and minds lean toward wholeness, even if it often feels like we can’t get there. While we go on with our day-to-day lives, acting as though everything is okay, the parts of us that were hurt—most often young parts—are still waiting and hoping for some kind of resolution to their pain. In therapy we look for those parts and take care of them; we nurture them and help them heal.

I believe that the choice to start talk therapy is a brave and empowering one, a moment where you are choosing to invest some time to learn more about who you are and where you've come from - knowledge you can use to improve your life. It doesn't matter if you are dissatisfied with your personal and/or professional relationships, struggling to identify your life goals, pondering the meaning of life, or stuck in what feels like an endlessly repeating loop of challenges -- knowledge is power.

You want to live more freely, more wholly, more in touch with who you really are. You want to find your way to wholeness and freedom. You may be looking to share and explore things that have never felt safe to open up before. You may have tried and benefited from other kinds of therapy, and are interested now in treatment that is focused on real, embodied experience now, in the present, rather than endlessly re-telling the same stories. You may have realized how the past has affected you, and you would rather define yourself than being bound by it. You are ready above all to reclaim your own innate goodness, wholeness, and strength.

When it comes to finding the right therapist for you, there’s no one-size-fits-all! It is my goal to see the full you and to be curious about what you uniquely need as the dynamic human that you are. I honor your personal values, past experiences and place in the world. Above all, I prioritize a feeling of relational safety, and I don’t subscribe to the idea that therapy needs to be uncomfortable or overwhelming; I care about your limits and boundaries and I trust your intuition. I also bring myself into the room with humor and compassion, and you’ll be able to feel my warmth and presence in a reliable and kind way.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
