I currently offer individual counseling focusing on relationship issues, life transitions, anxiety, depression, cancer and chronic illness, grief, caregiver stress, trauma, attachment issues, and end-of-life care.
I approach each individual with empathy, curiosity, and acceptance, inviting my clients to explore their emotions and struggles in a safe space. I have supported clients to identify and set boundaries, honor their needs, improve communication, and unlock their innate capabilities. I'm here to offer empathy, support, and guidance as we explore your problems and work together to find solutions. I take my cues from my clients, but maintain a focus on stated goals, and can help give structure to our sessions.

There are many ways that we as human beings suffer and try to cope. Layers of personal, familial, and historical trauma contribute to problematic relationship patterns, bodily pain and illness, over- or under-working, and obsessions. But these symptoms that are a source of suffering are often also expressing things that can't be expressed otherwise or pointing to aspects of living that need more care. I help my clients use words to explore these parts of self and to have new experiences, in order to make room for a life of more fullness, love, meaning, creativity, and ease.

I specialize in working with adults and young adults who are navigating significant change in their life as well as those facing loss and trauma. The definition and scope of both "loss" and "trauma" are as unique as the individual struggling to move through it; my work honors the unique circumstances each person brings to the therapeutic space while also utilizing methods that are proven to promote growth and reduce emotional distress. If you are struggling with a health or medical trauma, death/other significant loss, or a developmental trauma that is impacting current relationships, you do not need to struggle alone.

Is adulting getting you down? You're not sure you're in the right field. Or with the right person? Your friendships are changing. You're seeing patterns in your family that you don't like. Maybe you've moved or you're considering a major life decision. You thought you'd feel settled by now. But you're more overwhelmed than ever. Navigating your 20's and 30's is hard! You need a sounding board. Someone who's been there and gets it. Someone who can help you clarify how you feel, what you really want, and provide emotional support through personal and professional changes.

I'm accepting adult, teen, and couple clients. Therapy gives us a safe relationship where we can explore our inner world and consider taking new risks in our outer one. To my mind, therapy is the process of talking things over with someone and, together, giving meaning, hope, and clarity to pain, confusion, or stuckness. I endeavor to bring respect and curiosity to our work together. I believe that we each have the wisdom to solve our problems, but our strengths get blocked when we experience trauma, or linger in negative cycles with loved ones. In our work together, I aim to help you reconnect with your innate ability to thrive.

Do you feel unsatisfied, stuck, or anxious in your relationships? You watch as other people go on to have successful relationships while you feel stuck in repeat. Are you on the verge of divorce? You might be driven in other areas of your life but feel like you can't quite hack it when it comes to relationships. You might have tried a plethora of therapists in the past that don’t connect with you or seem not to understand where you are coming from. You are looking for someone to tell you like it is, understands where you are coming from, and invest in your future success.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
