I believe in utilizing psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy. However, my practice also focuses on changing the neural pathways that can become distorted when we experience trauma. With the help of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we can work to heal childhood trauma, adult PTSD, and distorted thinking that limits joy and growth in your life. Additionally, I have experience with supporting clients with cognitive integration after a psychedelic treatment. I can support you in taking control of both your body and mind.

As a native New Yorker, born and raised on Long Island, living in the city for the last 10 years, I have been connected to the people who choose to live here. A bustling city where, as Frank Sinatra said so well, "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere". I believe this to be true and I believe it to be easier with the work of psychology.

Therapy is all about helping clients in a way that makes sense for them - it's a mutually agreed upon experience that can be interactive and playful. Going to therapy doesn't mean something is "wrong," and doesn't even have to be about making changes or setting goals. It can be as simple and positive as sitting with a stranger, being heard and gaining insight. My style is eclectic and tailored to my clients' particular needs. I draw on a multitude of influences, primarily psychodynamic, interpersonal and relational.

Immediate availability! I focus on treating anxiety; depression; trauma; alcohol and substance abuse; gambling and other addictions; aging; gender identity; and relationship issues. Navigating life’s challenges can leave us feeling unsure of how to move forward, or that we are not our best selves, or that we are not living in a way we want to be living. Each of our paths through life are different, and each of our challenges are different. Some of us have challenges at work or at home that we aren't handling well. For some, past experiences can complicate how we live our current lives.

What do you see? Personal specialties include: Adults and Adolescents with Depression, Anxiety, Trauma Recovery, Couples Counseling, LGBTQ focus, and Chronic Illness Recovery.
As far back as I can remember I've always had an innate desire to help others and see their needs while being both patient and positive. This led me to a career in therapy and early on in this career I was fascinated with seeing the power of exposing people's inner strengths, allowing them a safe place to vent and work on coping skills. After a few years I continued to have a lingering feeling like I could be doing more for my clients. This led me to combine these existing techniques with a new theory called Emergence.

Walter offers both individual, couple and group treatment for “anticipated loss,” loss, grief and bereavement, depression and those separations associated with terminal and long-term chronic illness, the break-up of a long-term relationship, family concerns, addiction and substance abuse issues as well as palliative and end-of-life issues.
My approach in identifying, evaluating, assessing, ameliorating, modifying and/or providing a specific recommendation for adjustment to a disability, problem, or disorder of behavior, character, development, emotion, personality or relationships is by the use of verbal or behavioral methods with individuals, couples, families or groups utilizing a multimodal treatment approach. Logotherapy is the primary "psychotherapeutic orientation" which guides and directs all other treatment methods utilized in this private practice.

It is important to have physical and mental well-being.Therapy is a process of self discovery and healing. I believe in the process and help people understand that we do it together. It takes time to work on one's issues but I believe in the process of growth and positive change. I help people recognize that you have to love oneself , feel you deserve to be happier and do the work to make that happen.I believe that people are survivors and can overcome obstacles. I look up insurance benefits for patients and do all billing to lessen patient worry over this. I provide telehealth therapy for those who work from home or are disabled

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
