The mission of social work is rooted in the following core values: service, social justice, dignity & worth of person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. I whole heartedly believe in these values and make an intentional effort to sincerely help every client I have the privilege to work with. I respect and understand that therapy may be a difficult experience, however I believe that addressing sensitive and uncomfortable topics is necessary for healing, growth and healthy change.

I am prepared to work with individuals that struggle with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, addictions, chronic illness and life transition issues.
We all face times in our lives when the challenges we face may generate a sense of being overwhelmed and feeling uncertain. Such feelings can often be our signal to seek change. Therapy can be a powerful tool in obtaining healthy change, growth and empowerment during the challenging times in our lives. Working cooperatively with a trained therapist often provides individuals the time and space needed to examine these challenges and address how thoughts, feelings and behavior influence the ability to live intentionally.

Additionally, my clinical interests include (but are not limited to) gender identity/affirmation, grief & loss, emotional literacy, trauma, and chronic illness.
For so many of us, the past several years of pandemic and political unrest have taken a serious toll on our well-being, our mental health, our sense of belonging, and even our faith in humanity itself. In order for us to figure out how to navigate the tension between the world’s brokenness and its wholeness, I believe we first have to learn to navigate that tension within ourselves. As a therapist, I’m privileged to get to journey alongside people who are engaging in that work and to help my clients develop and access whatever tools and strategies will be most effective for them in their unique circumstances.

Life. Joys, sorrows, curve balls. In the midst of it all, we sometimes forget that we are naturally resilient, creative, and whole. We sometimes lose our compass. I’ve been there. When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, I was convinced that I had lost my ability to do the things that were meaningful to me and to feel alive. The reality of chronic illness-- as with life -- is that we never know what tomorrow will bring. Now, I see illness as a gift that reminds me to live each moment fully, trust in my capacity to accept and adapt, and listen to my soul’s calling for my time on this planet. I want that for you. You matter.

What so many of us are craving lately is peace. Our hearts, bodies and souls are carrying so much. We’re worried and weary. Maybe that’s what brought you here. You need help navigating uncertainty and change in your life--whether it's trauma, chronic illness, loss or anxiety. Sometimes we need someone to help guide us through these seasons of life and discover our inner wisdom to grow, heal and thrive again--not just survive. I’m here to help you find your way. To move through and heal from our pain, we need tools to feel grounded, to feel our feelings instead of run from them, and to develop a deeper relationship with ourselves.

I know what it's like to search for a therapist who understands attachment issues, chronic illness and caregiver stress and for ones who can incorporate faith in their practice.
Parenting a child with special needs or an adopted child who has experienced trauma requires extraordinary strength. Care-giving for aging parents presents similar demands that intensify our need for a listening ear and access to resources. If you are in the midst of the tension between managing a child or parent's medical and emotional needs while equipping him/her to independently provide as much self-care as possible, you could use some serious encouragement. The internal conflict that arises as you meet -- and fail to meet -- the parenting/care-giving challenge(s) is an experience not meant to be faced alone.

I am passionate about working with clients who are experiencing grief and loss, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, relationship issues and have a history of trauma. I adopt an anti-racist and LGBTQ affirming approach and recognize the ways in which ones identity development is impacted by systemic oppression.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
