Therapy is not magic, research and common experience tells us its mostly about finding another human you feel safe enough with to look at all the unloved and unintegrated parts of ourselves that are causing suffering and preventing us from expressing our potential. Successful therapy often requires that we unlearn lesions form the past, make way and reflect on new experiences in the present, and find ways to accept and integrate all the parts of ourselves and our collective consciousness

You just blew up at your daughter again. You’re not even sure what it was about this time, but lately, it doesn’t take much to send you over the edge. You’re simply spread too thin. If only you had some time for yourself, maybe you’d be able to solve some of these issues. But when you try to clear a little space for self-care, your inner voice tells you you’re being selfish. This cycle of shame, guilt, and exhaustion feels impossible to break free from. You wish you had the confidence to take a step back and create healthier boundaries for yourself but you just don’t know how to make a change. It all feels so totally hopeless.

I understand the challenges an individual, couple or family face as they age; illness, dementia, declining physical health, relationship changes or the loss of a loved one. This all too often results in depression, anxiety, caregiver fatigue or a feeling of being alone or lost. Together, we work on understanding the issues at hand towards a feeling of living life, not just existing to deal with the daily grind.

Hi and welcome to my profile! I enjoy working with teens, young adults, and adults that are seeking change in their lives. Maybe you feel like its time for the next chapter and need some help figuring out how to get from "here to there," or you feel like you are not seeing the results of your efforts. Many of my clients are also navigating how to manage chronic illness or pain. These conditions contribute to depression, anxiety, irritability, or even be downright debilitating. It can be exhausting to always consider your condition in your plans as well as difficult to maintain hope that symptoms are going to be easier to manage.

Sometimes the loss of a loved one, a change in a job, dealing with a chronic illness, or a marital or relationship break-up can feel overwhelming or even devastating.
Over my forty-five year career I have worked with many different people of every race, age, and problem type. I listen with a supportive, trained ear, and help my clients find the best coping strategies that will enable them to be happier. Even if only one person is in my office, I see that person as part of their family system, and help them make positive changes that will increase good feelings and reduce conflict. Nearly everyone goes through a rough period in their life when psychotherapy could be helpful for getting back on track.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
