When was the last time that you felt truly listened to, heard & understood? You more than likely talk to many people throughout your day but how often are you making connections with others that feel truly authentic? Many people are currently feeling isolated even when surrounded by others because they do not have someone in their life creating a welcoming and safe space that allows them to feel comfortable enough to share their worries & struggles. Therapy can be this place, where building a trusting relationship with a compassionate practitioner can allow you to feel seen & can support improvements in your health & well-being.

I primarily work with tween and teen girls ages in 6th grade and up. I also provide parenting consultation and support. I see kids typically experiencing anxiety, stress, peer difficulties, family complexities, and/or low self-esteem. My style is based on being an approachable, funny, and down-to-earth adult who your child can trust. My job is not to solve their problems but to help them develop the tools to do so themselves without experiencing high-stress levels. I have a specialty in the behavioral approaches to child and teen weight loss for kids struggling with overweight or obesity.

Life challenges us in many ways, and sometimes we find ourselves struggling. We may lack energy, motivation, or direction, and find ourselves not enjoying life very much at all. Stressful events, over-thinking, and an unbalanced lifestyle can knock us out of our “window of tolerance” and decrease our resilience. If we don't take the time to slow down and attend to our bodies as well as our thoughts and emotions, life can become a rush of activity without meaning and can lead to anxiety, depression, and disconnection. Therapy is a powerful way to take that time for yourself.

It is not easy to start therapy treatment. An ideal client is a person that, even through all the fears, doubts and questions, takes the first step to start treatment and gives a chance to explore a new technique to find better balance in their life. There could be setbacks in the process but the most important thing is to stay constant. The client is willing to work in their goals and implement skills learned in every session. Also, to ask questions needed, even if they feel afraid, in order to be able to communicate with their therapist in a honest way.

In working with clients, I consider the whole person, their mind, their body, their spirit. These three aspects aren’t separate but are in dynamic conversation: chronic physical symptoms are connected to our mental and emotional states, our feelings of depression relate to how we treat and relate to our bodies and sensorial lives. I enjoy supporting people facing life’s challenges, who are looking for a somatic dimension to their healing. I specialize in helping clients navigate difficult relationships, cope with grief and chronic illness, process the pandemic, and manifest greater depth, vibrancy, and purpose in their lives.

As someone with autoimmune issues, I have sought training to enhance my work helping others in coping with chronic illness & disabilities.
Anyone who has flown in an airplane knows the instruction to "put on your own oxygen mask before helping others" and that advice can be applied broadly to general life, but it's difficult to know what that looks like! If you want to learn more about how to balance your own needs/wants/self-care with the demands of fast paced daily life and family needs, we can figure out what "putting on your mask first" would be for your life. Whatever the problem, if you need more calm moments throughout your day, less conflict in your parenting, or ways to reduce stress for improved sleep/anxiety/depression, we can find solutions together.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
