As a trauma therapist, I work with many individuals facing deep heartache and struggles that sometimes feel too overwhelming and scary. Trauma can be triggered from some experiences such as past abuse, grief, chronic illness, or being a witness to traumatic events. This can also lead to symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic, fear, phobias, irrational fears, and agitation. Trauma can also lead to negative coping skills such as addictive patterns and behaviors. I can walk alongside you in a journey of healing and assist you in coming to a place of safety and peace and help you overcome and move you towards a place of healing!

As a 2x cancer survivor, I empathize deeply with chronic illness sufferers & their caregivers.
Grief can imprison our soul, mind & body. Spiritually this can trigger the darkness we courageously battle alone. When our soul is trapped within this darkness it can be difficult to navigate towards the doorway of freedom. Loss can take many forms-the death of a loved one or cherished pet, an unexpected medical diagnosis, the end of a relationship, a miscarriage, even the loss of a body part or job. No matter the source of your grief, it is valid & real. I will provide you with compassion, support & unique solutions using evidenced based techniques to help you cope & recover from grief &loss, anxiety, depression, trauma & cancer.

Are you struggling with relational issues, chronic illness, work/life stress, a mental illness, infertility, divorce, anxiety, depression? Life, always seems to have a lot more in store than we want or feel we can handle at any given time, it seems. Navigating all of the curves some times roadblocks can be overwhelming and you may find that you need help processing and maneuvering what's coming at you. The need for a safe space to be yourself, ugly cry, and be emotionally vulnerable. Everyone and every place is not always equipped to handle what our needs are in those moments, but I hope to provide that space for you.

Do you feel stuck? Unable to make decisions due to feeling overwhelmed? I get it. I too have felt this way. I know that sinking feeling of learning you have a chronic illness and will daily feel the pain, fatigue, and fear of "what's next?" Even worse, feeling that you have lost who you are and who you thought you always would be. It's enough to make even the strongest person feel like giving up. BUT...as someone who has personally fought this battle, I promise you that life can get better, in fact it can be great!

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
