Trauma comes in many forms. Whether it's the death of a loved one, abuse & violence, DHS involvement, a bad break-up, chronic illness, criminal justice involvement, chemical dependency, or loss of parental rights; experiencing trauma can feel very isolating. You might find yourself feeling detached from others or having difficulty with developing authentic connections with people. Maybe you feel lost and uncertain about how to carry on. Or maybe you're finding yourself lashing out at others with little or no reason. Somedays it can feel like nobody understands your pain or how broken you feel.

Day-to-day life can be challenging! When you add symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma, life becomes unbearable. Naturally, we are not born knowing how to navigate the flood of feelings or the loneliness that comes from stress, trauma, and losses. Attempting to fix it yourself or ignoring the problem can result in a cycle of escalating emotions. But you don't have to do this alone. Therapy is a collaborative relationship where together we process your personality, values, and strengths and use them to get you to a better and calmer place. I use evidence-based psychotherapy approaches that best suit you, including CBT and ACT.

Handling problems on your own can be a good decision. But when things don't improve and life becomes overwhelming, getting help might be necessary. Sometimes, people are reluctant to go to therapy because they see it as a sign of weakness. It can be difficult to open up and be vulnerable to someone new. But there are times when everyone needs help and guidance through life's challenges. I understand this relutance and I'm here to make this process as easy and as helpful as possible. I will listen to your problems, give you encouragement and support, and teach you the skills you need to improve your life.

I find myself grounded in an Attachment-based, somatic, and existential approach working with ages 3-77+. As humans, we each are the experts of our lives and lived experiences. It is through that expertise that we hold the capability to heal. As a play therapist, I believe that children communicate and heal through play and utilize integrative and synergetic approaches, sand tray, attachment-based play, and EMDR to assist children and their families. With some clients, I will evaluate systemic norms and how the client can be empowered by examining the role of power structures as they relate to the impact of developing identity.

The world we live in can be overwhelming at times. The stresses of family, work, school, and other responsibilities in our lives can add up to create overwhelming stress – additional stresses can also come from messages we hear in the media or through social media platforms. Sometimes, these issues can be easier to manage with a little extra help. When you are ready to reach out, help is available. I have been trained at Health Hope Harmony, to approach mind body nutrition with a health at every size mentality focusing on treating eating disorders and body image.

Therapy dissects life occurrences and issues and identifies the obstacles that may be limiting personal performance. Once the obstacles are identified, emotional growth can occur through a process of learning to adapt or removing negative thinking. My job, as a therapist, is to support my clients' feelings and thoughts, while at the same time to encourage the transformation of those emotions and thoughts toward the pursuit of a fuller, more satisfying life.

I believe that everyone is unique and deserves a therapeutic approach that will meet their needs. I have worked hard in creating a personalized approach to therapy which allows each person to be the center of focus and go through their journey at their own pace. A dedicated playroom allows children to explore and process at their own level through play and creativity. With teenagers my focus is on their skills and strengths while building them up to help them meet their goals and overcome obstacles. With adult clients I provide a safe place where they can process openly without fear or judgement.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
