There is no single path to navigating a well-lived and resilient life. With a busted GPS and an outdated map, we can find ourselves driven by the wind and the rain--lost and alone in a shadowy forest. I help clients rebuild trust in their navigating system, and grow their resilience to handle the inevitable difficulties in life. I am a somatic therapist, meaning I enlist the resources of your body and nervous system to guide you in moving from a stuck and uncertain path toward one more grounded in resilience.

Maybe you’re struggling to understand why no matter what you do, it never feels like "enough". You sometimes feel like you don’t quite belong in the world, or like others have some kind of shield and map that you were never given. You might even be incredibly self-aware of your grief or trauma, but have difficulty processing your feelings because you always had to push down your pain or focus on others. Maybe you’ve dealt with painful relationships that have made it difficult to trust yourself and your feelings. You might be dealing with overwhelming life transitions or trying to explore your identity and purpose.

I have expertise in working with anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness, cancer, and grief and loss.
We all go through things in our lives that are difficult. I believe that it is through these struggles that we have the opportunity to grow. If you're finding yourself feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or you're not able to function like you'd like to, it may be time to seek the support of a therapist. Oftentimes connecting with another person to help guide you can be the changing factor in transitioning from struggle to growth.

I value connecting with people in ways that support a sense of aliveness, meaning, and clarity of purpose. We will work together to address the challenges we face when moving from one phase of life to another — such as leaving home, going to school, being a parent, caring for ourselves, changing relationships, and facing the unknown. We will discover and explore how your inner guidance system or compass can guide you toward your own health and healing capacity.

I have experience with teens, adults, and older adults (55+), chronic illness, mood disorders, grief, and daily stress.
The difficulties of everyday life can sometimes become overwhelming. When on top of those difficulties we add the stresses of illness, anxiety, depression, our identity, our love lives and more-we can easily feel burdened to our breaking point. We just don't feel heard. Sometimes these situations can linger for months or years, making it hard to meet our obligations and live our lives in the way we would like. However, those difficulties and stresses don't need to define who we are-or where we're going. It's my goal as a therapist to help you tell your story.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
