Helping clients facing grief or chronic illness is my passion. I work with clients experiencing many kinds of losses, including death of a parent, partner, or one's own health. For nearly a decade, I was a hospice grief counselor providing support to individuals and families. I help clients finding meaning after devastating challenges, while developing practical coping strategies. I am certified in Thanatology, the study of death, dying and bereavement, through the Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC).

I work with adults navigating major life transitions (post-college, relocation, career, relationship, new parent, marriage, retirement), anxiety disorders, relationship issues (including couples work), coping with cancer and other chronic illness (both patients and loved ones) and with healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, therapists).
Feeling overwhelmed, constantly unsettled or a persistent sadness that colors everything? Drained energy and mental exhaustion can leave us not knowing how to start the healing process. Seeking support is a courageous step to allow another person in and build a safe relationship in order to facilitate change. I provide a nonjudgemental supportive environment where we can work together to decrease feelings of depression, anxiety, confusion, and other uncomfortable states we often find ourselves in. I will empower and challenge you to increase self-awareness, develop insight, and learn healthy ways to cope with life's challenges.

I believe our emotional and physical health are inseparable. In psychotherapy, we will explore how your brain, emotions, body, and spirituality work together in creating moment-by-moment experiences within you. My background in neuropsychology and psychotherapy will guide our work in an integrated and holistic framework. As a registered psychologist (PSY 33916) specializing in neuropsychology, I offer neuropsychological assessment, individual psychotherapy and cognitive remediation for adults (age 18-64), in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Currently, I provide teletherapy services only, to residents of California.

Are you scheduling an elective procedure that will make your life better, but that has inherent risks? Or perhaps you need help in healing from a disturbing medical procedure? One of my specialties as a psychotherapist is to help you manage and heal from such events. I have spent 30 years helping people diagnosed with breast cancer, other forms of cancer, and medical crises as well as life transitions, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and grief.

The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it. -C.C. Scott. We all go through challenges in life, and at times they can seem bigger than our ability to manage. In therapy, we can work together to cultivate the life you want through reducing the grip of depression, anxiety, and stress; healing from grief, loss, past abuse or trauma; regulating your nervous system; developing effective coping skills; improving relationships and communication; and building on your personal strengths. I want to help you to engage with life more fully and to support you in pursuing what you value most.

There are many reasons you may be seeking therapy: you may want help with a specific issue (divorce, loss, depression, anxiety), you may not be exactly sure why you want help other than a vague sense that things aren't right, or you may be experiencing discontent, anxiety or depression even though you function at a high level and are living a "good" life.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
