The capacity for healing resides in everyone. Therapy is about unhooking from self-limiting adaptive patterns, while cultivating self-acceptance and reconnecting with essential wise parts of yourself. I work with men and women using a depth-oriented, body-mind approach to explore the complexity of identity and relationships. My aim is to help you understand from an embodied perspective the deeper dynamics of your struggle, strengthen the parts inside of you that can move beyond it and engage in life with a greater sense of meaning, strength, and self-compassion.

Something in your life has become enough of a problem that you are seeking help. When things don't turn out the way you imagined, or you find yourself repeating the same patterns that keep you working against yourself, it is only natural to feel anxious, depressed, and/or overwhelmed. You might feel blindsided by a big life transition, paralyzed by shame or fear, or as if you are constantly fighting an uphill battle. Whatever the issue, you are capable of making change, and I am here to help.

Adult children of narcissists and emotionally immature parents often find their way to therapy at some point in life seeking to understand why they feel depressed and anxious. I specialize in the impact these early relationships have on our adult lives. You may have developed heightened empathy either as a response to your upbringing or as one of the 20% of the population who identify as a Highly Sensitive Person. Either way our work together aims to alleviate your confusion and suffering, heal past trauma and restore your connection to yourself and others.

I believe in therapeutic conversation; I am not the 'expert' on your life; you are that expert. My expertise lies in facilitating dialogue that looks at the obstacles currently blocking your preferred vision for your current and future self. My ultimate quarry is change: not just the hoped for differences you may want from your partner, your job, your family, but the changes from within that you must incorporate. The old adage really is true: you can only change yourself. Truly effective therapy happens when you are honestly ready to tackle the person in the mirror.

If only you could just "fix it" or think "positively" you won't ever have to feel this way again. Yet, this battle never seems to win in your favor. The constant "should-ing" has left you feeling insecure, anxious, and stuck. Your self-doubt and inner critic are roaring and it's gotten difficult to even know what you want or need. I provide a safe and warm environment to slow down your busy mind and ease your distress to support you on the journey of tuning into your needs, finding comfort and confidence in your inner voice, and creating changes that will allow you to align your actions with your values.

As a post modern thinker, I believe that each person has the skills and strengths to create an affirmative narrative, that is not based on negative self-talk or unproductive messages. I like holding conversations that will spark curiosity and explore opportunities to author your new stories.

“These are challenging times." What an understatement, right? Things may seem more tough, more confusing, more stressful and difficult with the uncertainty and chaos of our world today. As someone who has worked in healthcare and practiced as a mental health clinician for over 20 years, I have seen the increase in stress, anxiety, depression and, at times, hopelessness in my clients AND my colleagues during the past few years. But I have also witnessed tremendous resilience, reprioritizing, reevaluating, reorganizing and increased motivation during this time.

People come to me when they feel overwhelmed by their emotions, stuck in spirals of anxiety, depression, or trauma responses. I provide one-on-one, couples, and group therapy to help people explore their identities and relationship issues so that they can overcome the walls they have unintentionally created that may be shutting others out. I tend to work best with those who are curious about themselves and eager to grow.

I provide therapy to people across the lifespan, from young children to older adults, as well as couples and families. While the methods may change depending on age and circumstance the goals are often similar: to feel understood, to connect, and to grow. I work in a respectful, collaborative and creative way to explore the parts of self that might be contributing to feelings of stagnation and being stuck. I was previously licensed as an Educational and Child Psychologist in the UK and I have extensive experience in schools, working with children, parents and faculty to support student growth and wellbeing.

You're feeling depressed, isolated, frustrated and angry with the state of the world. And yet you're still expected to keep up with overwhelming pressures and demands of day to day life. It can feel impossible. All this stress can cause us to lose sight of what’s important and end up stuck in the same unhelpful patterns in our work, our relationships, and our own thoughts. But it doesn't have to be this way. What if you could get back in touch with your hopes, dreams, and desires? I work with clients struggling with bipolar disorder or depression, job and career stress, loneliness, and relationship conflicts.

I focus on areas of traumatic events- abuse, chronic illness, death, divorce, disaster and war- complex cultural family problems and gender dysphoria, transition, GCS.
I continue to feel humbled by the power of therapy. Therapy will heal your pain. But it will not just relieve your suffering, a strong client-therapist fit will allow you to bear witness to the strength that comes from the courage of confronting the vulnerability within ourselves. Looking for a therapist should feel like buying a car- it needs to feel right, cost right and look right. Because that feeling of trust and safety is crucial to creating a space of brutal honesty as you begin to identify and explore your conscious and unconscious obstacles to equip yourself with the emotional tools and healing you seek.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
