I would be honored to work alongside you in your journey towards healing. You may feel like you are barely surviving.  You may exhausted from putting on a brave face each day, yet you are afraid to let anyone know you are struggling for fear of being a burden. My approach in the therapy process is to give you space to process your thoughts and emotions.  My goal is to come alongside you and help you discover ways to find healing and peace.

I frequently work with people who have issues related to perfectionism, anxiety, depression, co-dependency, emotional neglect, trauma, relationship issues, and chronic illness.
We all struggle to find balance in the roles we are trying to maintain in our lives. Our past, relationship struggles, motivation, anxiety and depression can all complicate our attempts to navigate how to be the best version of ourselves. Many of us "know" what to do, but have not successfully identified ways to manifest that into action. While we cannot change the things we have experienced, or the behavior of those around us, we can identify successful ways to approach our difficulties. A part of moving forward can be gaining more awareness of the mind/body connection and exploring insight and behaviors to make lasting change.

For many years my clients have primarily been individuals, groups, and families coming out of abusive and sometimes violent relationships and addiction. Although that was the original primary focus, most of them also struggled with other accompanying factors like depression, anxiety and other serious mental health diagnoses. My clinical focus has recently shifted to more of a community-based population. I have found this work incredibly rewarding. I enjoy working with additional needs such as grief, prenatal, postpartum depression, and abandonment trauma to name a few.

Bio video on my website! I served 8 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. before finding my new calling and love; therapy. We are not meant to do life alone, and times of struggle can be painful illustrations of that. By the time you decide to seek out therapy, you have likely been white-knuckling the steering wheel of life for some time, adapting in the only ways you know. When you walk into my office, please know the courage it took to get here is not lost on me.

At times, life is overwhelming and complex - trauma and stress can leave us disconnected from our bodies, feeling like we are floating through life, not truly present. After a while, we begin to feel stuck. The things we did to ease anxiety and alleviate the pain are no longer working for us. How do we change these patterns and stop the cycle? It is my goal as a counselor to help my clients become unstuck and find healing. Sometimes, we need a gentle push to simply begin the journey.

You’re likely here because things aren’t going well and you’re stuck. That’s OK! This is a normal experience everybody faces – I've been there too, it’s part of being human. Hear this: there is no problem you’re facing that can’t be made better in some way. I work with adults and teens get past these sticking points, supporting people experiencing addiction, suicidal ideation, mood issues, life changes, and relationship problems - people who want to find true purpose and meaning regardless of what's happened to them or what’s happening inside of them.

The human experience can be challenging at times, but can also be beautiful and meaningful. I am a Licensed Masters Social Work, Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Equine Therapist and Certified Thanatologist along with EMDR training. Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
