Do you feel stuck in patterns of anxious thoughts, disordered eating, or unhealthy relationships? Do you feel unsafe in your body due to trauma or chronic illness? I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Somatic Therapy to help clients get unstuck and reconnect to the wisdom and safety of their body. I use an attachment-based and trauma-informed approach to help clients identify their unhelpful narratives, challenge them, and take healthy risks. If you are ready to go deeper than traditional talk therapy and crave a healing connection with your mind, body, and spirit, I am here to help.

Are you experiencing grief and loss? Are you navigating health challenges or chronic illness? Do you have parts of yourself that are difficult to share with others? Have you experienced medical or relational/attachment trauma? You've come to the right place. As a queer therapist with chronic illness, I draw from both professional and lived experiences. I believe that therapy can be a reparative experience and that the relationship between a therapist and client can foster immense change and growth. I see clients both via telehealth or outdoors at a local park.

I see therapy as a collaborative and healing process. I view you as the expert on yourself. It is my job to gently shine a mirror and assist you in your empowerment and growth. During therapy sessions my clients are like a river. The therapeutic process is a kayak floating on the current provided by your thoughts and feelings. I am the paddle. I will steer, guide, and help you get unstuck but you determine the direction and the pace at which the process flows. My practice utilizes an integrative, process-orientated approach that is trauma informed and client centered.

I believe it is natural for humans to want to change how they feel. Unfortunately, how we seek this change can determine the difference between healthy vs. unhealthy behavior. My work is guiding you through an in-depth exploration of how early experiences have shaped your sense of self and how you manage feelings. My goal is to help you develop both a compassionate view of these experiences and a more secure sense of self. In addition to Dual Diagnosis, I work with actors/artists/writers/entertainment professionals, gay men navigating mid-life, and adults who have experienced sexual abuse.

Life can be such a challenge. We humans are so resilient, but also fragile, and life can hurl things at us we could have never imagined. We often feel we're doing our best; it often doesn't seem good enough. Support is crucial. It's immensely useful to have a therapist who ACTIVELY helps you face life on life's terms. My clients are growth-oriented people who take a proactive role toward change. We look at their situation, feelings, behaviors and opportunities for growth w/compassion, hope and motivation. My style is warm and direct. I believe in using humor whenever possible - therapy doesn't have to be a drag.

Chronic Illness Therapists
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
