I specialize in working with adults who suffer from anxiety and depression, relationship issues, family and work related concerns, lack of self-worth, identity and purpose, living with chronic illness - especially cancer.
If your life is fully functional, you don't have to struggle to understand why things are the way they are. It is when we hit a wall in our relationships, career or health that we get pushed out of our comfort zone and start looking for answers. People often think that they can deal with all these on their own. However, emotional wellbeing is essentially a two person process as we can only find ourselves in the eye of another. The therapist's questions might bring out the answers in you that will support you in developing a much needed fresh perspective in life.

Do you feel overwhelmed by what life has thrown your way? Getting out of our own heads and speaking out loud are the first steps to making progress toward being our most authentic selves. As a therapist, my role is to ask you introspective questions and provide alternative ideas to navigate your circumstances, but YOU will guide the discussion, sharing what is most important for me to know to help you meet your goals. Taking an affirming, DEI, and culturally humble approach to therapy, I honor how our unique perspectives, experiences, strengths, and identities have shaped us in many ways and provide a map for who we want to be.

Life can be overwhelming, and finding yourself and your voice is a journey. As a therapist, I'm here to guide you through this process. My role is to ask you thought-provoking questions and offer alternative perspectives to help you navigate your unique circumstances. As a Licensed Master Social Worker, I am dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families navigate the challenges that life throws their way. These challenges can be from a recent diagnosis, the long days of motherhood, the evolution of relationships and marriage, sometimes it can just be that the work/life balance is lost again. Whatever it is, I am here.

Asking for help is not easy. By now, you've tried to do it on your own, and it's been harder than you expected. You may be reading this because your life hasn't turned out the way you hoped. Perhaps you feel unsatisfied with your personal relationships or your professional life. Many factors can influence how we feel, like not having enough time for yourself, being the caretaker of others or having your own health issues, and job or relationship dissatisfaction, to name a few.

Drawing on a desire to help people overcome obstacles in their personal relationships, my professional work involves counseling individuals and families in order to achieve conflict resolution and better communication. As a neutral third party, I am better able to identify the challenges my patients face and facilitate positive change. Working with families, it is essential to foster a high level of trust between the therapist and family members. Mutual respect and open communication are essential to the therapeutic process. Engaging patients at their level, I help people find the change that they desire and the strength within themselves to achieve that change.

I studied to become a therapist in order to advocate and work directly with people for change. In therapy, we do this together by looking at the main issue at hand. With gentleness, we address the context of the issue such as its history, the impact it's having, and the ways you'd like to see it changing. As a Latina, I also appreciate how cultural aspects of our family and community show up. However you define culture, we can explore its importance and impact on you.

I believe in promoting healing and healthy mind through effective psychotherapy. Life as magnificent as it is, comes with challenges that can overwhelm an individual to the point where his/her daily functioning is significantly impaired. Psychotherapy provides a means for managing and coping with issues that at some time or another interfere with daily functioning. My goal is to assist individuals with learning how to manage/cope with the challenges presented by life.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
