I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in the treatment of individuals, couples, and adolescents from diverse backgrounds with a history of depression, anxiety, trauma and chronic illness.
At some point in our lives, we all experience feelings such as sadness, anger, grief, loneliness and disappointment. For some, these feelings can last longer than expected and start to interfere with daily life. Shame, guilt and fear of being judged often prevent people from reaching out for help. My hope is to create a safe and non judgmental environment for you to process difficult emotions and explore how to overcome obstacles.

The impact that a life-changing diagnosis can have on individuals and their families can be profound. It can feel like a betrayal when our bodies don’t allow us to live our lives the way we expect, impacting our relationships, careers, and hopes. How can we move forward in life when it feels like our bodies are holding us back? How do we grieve our hopes and dreams while trying to fully understand how they are affected by our new circumstances? How do we do all of this while trying to navigate a medical system that often leaves us feeling unheard and unseen?

The best kind of therapy will help you feel more alive to yourself and open to the world. In my practice, I have seen countless times how a strong patient-therapist relationship can be a life-changing resource. I'm deeply invested in understanding why you're in my office today—whether due to dispiriting relationships, self-destructive habits, or a bleak self-image—while simultaneously helping you locate the more capable and resourceful parts of your identity. My style is warm, curious but also candid and direct. I trust that my patients have come to me because they can handle (and need) honesty.

It requires a lot of strength and courage to ask for help. Reaching out can be scary and unsettling, but you don't have to do it alone. I acknowledge what it took for you to seek help, and want to provide a safe, warm and comfortable environment for you to talk and open up. A strong therapeutic alliance is the key in ensuring honest, open, and constructive communication. In my sessions, I like to work together as two experts tackling your problems. I am direct, interactive, and genuine and will always be honest and upfront with you.

We are thrown into life without any guide. Life asks much from us, takes much from us and gives much to us. Learning how to fundamentally hold your own in your own existence, live by your own desires, your own passions, is central to living a life that you find meaningful and develop relationships that are deep leading to an overall sense of happiness. I help clients accept reality as it is, to learn to be themselves and to enjoy being themselves. Internal harmony is essential to human happiness. In sessions, clients discover the totality of their personhood, come to appreciate being alive, to thrive rather than to simply survive.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and goal-oriented. Within a non-judgmental space that feels safe, supportive, and empathetic, we dedicate ourselves to the exploration of inner life experiences and associated emotions and behaviors. The goal is to be heard and understood while progressing thoughtfully toward desired change by integrating various therapeutic techniques, including talk-therapy (psychodynamic), trauma-informed (EMDR and RTM), mindfulness and somatic (body centered) approaches. As a twin, I also specialize in twin-loss, in all stages of bereavement.

My ideal clients are young women struggling with relationships, self esteem, and body image. If they grew up in a manipulative, abusive, or enmeshed environment, they might find themselves taking on perfectionistic or caretaking behaviors. They might also be experiencing a “quarter life crisis,” exploring a new career path, or unpacking how family dynamics have impacted them. My vision is for clients to put themselves first, live by their values, and understand their needs. In our work together, we’ll get clear on how your past has influenced your present so you can build a life that aligns with what’s most important to you.

Here is how I see it- every one of us has encountered unique challenges in our lives that have led us to how we are feeling and functioning in this moment. Often times, these challenges lead us to be harsh, inflexible, and unforgiving to ourselves, resulting in unwanted consequences in our relationships with ourselves, others, our work, and our families. My goal with clients is to help you gain knowledge, skills, and compassion as we explore these challenges and find new ways for you to relate to yourself and the world.

Life is worth living when we feel authentic and genuine, and engage in meaningful relationships. Sadness, grief, disappointment, hurt, and loss are all-natural human emotions. Feeling chronically anxious, depressed, inadequate, or unlovable are not. These unrelenting feelings come from an injury (or injuries) that hasn’t healed. Regardless of where your emotional injury comes from, you can learn to regulate your reactions, heal these wounds, take care of yourself, and connect to your sense of meaning and purpose. The more you live in alignment with your values and what is meaningful to you, the better you will feel.

If you’re feeling stuck in the same patterns you don’t need to struggle alone. Therapy with me is a relationship where you can feel free to be (and discover) who you are. Together we create a space where you can speak openly to examine present and past, so that your desires for the future can be fulfilled. In our work you can expect to gain insight into underlying narratives and beliefs that are shaped by a unique personal history, learn new skills that alleviate suffering, heal, notice increased confidence and reduced conflict. When your perspective shifts so does the way others relate to you.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
