Feeling stuck? I base much of my approach on the idea that we are not programmed to be our own best friends, and that gets in the way. Our minds' default settings are not usually set up for us to feel extra self-confident, extra self-compassionate, or extra calm when the storms roll in. Life generally doesn't let us off the hook very easily, but if we can learn to look at things in new ways, we can find peace in knowing that we are doing the best we can with what life has dealt us.
Whether we are talking about addiction, depression, anxiety or relationship troubles, there are almost always unhelpful thoughts that need to be examined. However, doing so without self-compassion is often unnecessarily judgmental and harsh. Let's set aside the painful judgments and simply ask "How is that working for me?"
I treat my clients with the dignity and respect that I wish them to feel for themselves. I do not think for people or tell them how to run their lives. People must determine for themselves whether or not to seek changes in their inner and outer worlds.
