The first time looking through Psychology Today profiles can be overwhelming. It can still be overwhelming even if you’ve done it many times. You may already be feeling so stuck, so low, so unmotivated and maybe even be asking yourself the question, “what’s wrong with me?”. If that’s the case, combing through these profiles with so many words can feel like a lot. There is no shame in feeling that way and you are certainly not alone. My hope for you and everyone looking for help is that you can find a space where you feel safe and connected to work on why you are struggling.

Psychological evaluations, screening instruments and or testing help the therapist and clients identify areas of concern in four domains, that is, biological, psychological, social and spiritual. Based on findings, recognizing the primary area of concern and setting goals and tasks is critical in reducing mental health symptoms that are most debilitating to the client. Her specialty is in treating people with addiction and underlying disorders such as ADHD, depression, anxiety and trauma.

Don't give up on healing. When people experience trauma, especially chronic trauma, they become hardwired to look for danger. Constantly living in survival mode is physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausting. You may not believe it yet but healing is possible. You can have healthy relationships. You can have peace. You can have healthy boundaries. I would like to help you learn how to actually live and not just survive. I specialize in helping women learn about how trauma affects their bodies which will allow them to better recognize and manage their trauma symptoms and move towards a path of healing.

As a former hospice bereavement coordinator with grief training from David Kessler, I can help bring hope to misery. I provide a safe place to feel heard and validated as you walk through an overwhelming maze of pain. You'll learn that you're not doing anything wrong; grief is hard! Instead of simply medicating the pain, we will do real work to address and heal from long-buried conflicts and new heartaches, moving toward a deeper and more lasting wellness. We'll learn that joy and happiness can exist right beside grief, and we'll discover tools to maintain connection to your loved one while learning how to honor them.

I am passionate about immigrant acculturation, life transitions, LGBTQIA, and women’s issues. Life transitions are challenging. Reentering the workforce, career change, separation, divorce, retirement, and immigration can make us question our identity and/or self-worth. There are physical and emotional pressures as we navigate academic, social, cultural, racial or financial systems outside of our frame of reference. You and I can work together to manage the effects of these transitions.

Twila Are you falling apart? Or did you try to put yourself back together and have left over pieces? Either way may make you feel vulnerable . It can be uncomfortable, unsettling, and anxiety-provoking. I’m more of a holistic counselor which means I am not quick to assume you need medicine. That might mean we talk about food, sleep, spirituality, mindfulness, music, and moving your body.

Our brain is an organ that plays a significant role in how the rest of our body functions. Like any other organ, if something doesn’t feel right or it is exposed to trauma or an injury, we should give more attention to its care. It can sometimes be challenging to clearly define what we are feeling or why we respond the way we do. Opening up to another person can be difficult and meeting the right therapist is very important to your mental and emotional health. You should feel comfortable and supported.

Christian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?

Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?

Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?

While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?

The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
