I am passionate about ensuring my clients feel seen and understood for who they are as people first and foremost and work to cultivate a therapeutic relationship that works for them personally. I'd like to start by talking about what brings you to seek therapy. Are there precipitating events, a culmination of events, general discomfort, social pressure, self examination, or anything else? In order to achieve your goals, we will discuss your concerns, thoughts, feelings and perceptions. This can be a quick fix or a longer term treatment plan - something that we will agree on mutually.

In my practice I work with clients of all backgrounds and age groups; and I have a specialty in adolescence and young adulthood. I enjoy supporting clients as they navigate growing up and becoming adults in this complex world. My approach is grounded in Psychodynamic Theory and the belief that many of our problems are rooted in thinking patterns, behaviors, and emotional responses that we developed early in life. My work is eclectic and collaborative. I draw on many modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Treatment, Family Systems Theory and Motivational Interviewing.

I provide therapy that is warm, customized, and collaborative. I am committed to the continuous learning and unlearning that enables me to be responsive to the needs of my communities, particularly BIPOC & Trans/GNC/Queer clients. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling stuck, uncertain, uneasy, or depressed. I work with clients to contextualize these experiences fostering deeper insight, creative responses, meaning, and connection. I believe that therapeutic work extends beyond the therapy session and I emphasize systemic responses to systemic injustice.

I help people to become more aware of their emotions and ways of thinking about concerns and problems that impact them in daily life. I believe that awareness leads to a better understanding which enhances coping skills. I am also interested in how an individual is impacted emotionally by their environment and social context. People who work with me comment on my being authentic and genuine, willing to engage and challenge as necessary.

Sometimes life's challenges, transitions, or conditions are more than we can handle. Feelings of sadness or fear overwhelm. We realize that the way we are living is not how we want to live but are unable to make changes on our own. Unhealthy relationships, dealing with disappointment or loss, feeling alone, or struggling with an inner critic, are a few examples of what leads people to reach out to me. In my practice I largely employ the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model as my framework but also draw techniques from CBT, EMDR, DBT, mindfulness, somatic experiencing, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, when needed.

Are you ready to grow into who you are becoming and move beyond being limited by who you’ve been and what you experienced in the past? Experiencing trauma often cuts people off from parts of themselves and can make it difficult to experience the present moment and move forward. In my therapeutic practice, I aim to create a warm and supportive space where you can embrace the fullness of yourself in a way that allows for healing, insight and positive change.

The process of beginning therapy and finding a therapist can feel overwhelming and frightening. I understand and believe those who are starting this process are truly courageous and resourceful. In my experience, I have found having a safe, contained, and trusting environment to share all of one's thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be restorative and healing. Each experience is different and some clients desire short term treatment while others wish for a more long term therapeutic relationship to achieve their goals; I look forward to exploring options and co-creating a safe and productive space with those seeking therapy.

I have the opportunity after years in the mental health field to dedicate more time to doing what I love to do most —help people discover insights and tools for psychological well-being. I've been fortunate to witness transformations in the lives of those I've had the privilege to assist with a treatment strategy that combines three distinct pathways to psychological wellness. Starting with traditional psychodynamic techniques, we understand the "what" and "why" of your experiences. Feeling validated serves as a foundation for healing.

Philosophy and Practice: I offer short- and long-term psychotherapy. While working collaboratively with clients, we will determine the goals for treatment and the steps towards reaching those goals. Each person has their strengths and weakness and we will work together to access your strengths, while decreasing vulnerabilities to stress. The purpose of psychotherapy is to help people to change in ways that creates a more satisfying life. Past events often get in the way of moving forward and I help clients to let go and find resolution. My focus is on intersectional identity and helping folks of color in particular.

Have you been stressed and/or anxious from the daily grind? Do you find yourself in arguments and confrontations that are becoming contentious and emotionally taxing? Have you noticed an increase in drinks or personal remedies used to “take off some steam”, or decisions that warrant your concern upon reflection? If any of this sounds familiar, you’ve come to the right place! As a Black man, I understand and empathize with the unique stressors POC may experience such as imposter syndrome, alienation, and feeling overwhelmed while navigating the professional, often hostile, landscape, and vicarious trauma.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 10026?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
