Aging's many challenges, such as chronic illness, cognitive changes, grief and loss can all take a toll on a person's emotional well-being. Emotions such as, sadness, fear and anger can make you feel stuck or even hopeless. My practice focuses on helping older adults develop tools to face these challenges head on and find a place of peace and acceptance.

I use methods that incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness through experiential therapy.
As a LICSW candidate and social work clinician, I work with those struggling with eating disorders and body image distortions. I work with youth through adult clients who are looking to form a healthy relationship with food and exercise. I also work with athletes who are looking to improve their performance through increased positive thoughts about food and sport. I have prior experience working with children, adolescents, and families in a community mental health agency, providing support and therapeutic intervention for youth struggling with mental illness

I'm excited that a part of you is curious about ways to get support for whatever life has thrown at you. This is a puzzling time for most! There may be a part of us that is anxious, depressed, critical, scared or many other sensations that can take a hold of us. For years and even decades we have formed our own ways of dealing with things with the tools we had available. There is help and support for all of us from the world outside of us and from the world within us. Mental health and addiction are quiet illnesses that we often don't want to share or acknowledge.

Do things sometimes look pretty good from the outside, but on the inside there is a lot of stress and uncertainty? Are you worried about your kids, what they might be facing and the pressures they are experiencing? Maybe you’re struggling with the story of your life not being what you imagined. If the symptoms you are experiencing are getting in the way of the quality of life you deserve, reaching out for therapy is an important step to healing.

Behavior is more complex than simple choice. Behaviors develop over time and are impacted by various internal and external factors. Our approach to facilitating behavior change recognizes that each individual's unique situation and the factors that contribute to their choices and behaviors can be understood. Together, we can use this understanding to create a plan for change. Two underutilized interventions for behavior change are cue desensitization and environmental engineering. We will join you in your environment in order to most effectively foster these changes in your life.

I believe that one of the most important things a therapist can do is offer a place where people feel accepted for exactly who they are. When people feel accepted they are more comfortable sharing their stories, working towards change, and accepting themselves. With the support of a therapist, it is possible to gain a better understanding of one’s self, improve relationships, effectively manage stress, see things from a different perspective, and replace what is not working with what might work better. Please visit my website at www.birchhavennh.com for more information.

Do you remember the confusion of your teen years and the worries about "growing up"? Stressful, right? Being a teenager and emerging adult can feel overwhelming at times. There is so much to navigate with school, family, friend groups, relationships, peer pressure, social media, identity, work, expectations, life goals...adulting! Sometimes all of this mental clutter can be paralyzing and keep your young person feeling stuck. If you are looking for some extra support, I can help.

I work with people on a variety of issues, typically those struggling with anxiety/depression, stress management, substance use and addiction. There are moments in our lives that feel extra stressful or overwhelming and this is perhaps more true today given these especially challenging times. This is when having strong, healthy coping strategies and the right tools can help us feel back in control with the ability to better manage life again.

I have an integrative, mostly behavioral approach to treating individuals. I focus on radical self-acceptance, non-rumination when feelings stuck in difficult thought cycles, and understanding the nervous system habits in the process of healing and self-regulation. It is very important that the therapeutic relationship is the right fit for you in your journey to maintain balance and health.

PRACTICE IS FULL. I practice from a primarily cognitive-behavioral approach. Treatment typically includes challenging unhelpful beliefs about yourself, others and the world. Exposure and Response Prevention is typically used as the first line of treatment for OCD, OCD related disorders and anxiety disorders. I also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment, Dialectical Behavioral, and Relational therapies. Any behavior is an intention to sustain the self; yet many times the preserving behavior exacerbates the distress, fear, sadness, or anger.

My therapeutic work is informed by evidence-based behavioral practices such as DBT and ACT which provide practical techniques to learn new ways of interacting with uncomfortable thoughts and painful emotions.
Are you feeling trapped and consumed by anxiety, disordered eating, or poor self esteem? I am a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental therapist who can help you take charge of your life again. I would feel privileged to provide you with a safe space and useful coping tools in a comfortable therapeutic setting. Intense emotions and negative intrusive thoughts often take us out of the present moment and slow our progress towards a life of freedom, purpose, and adventure. I specialize in treating individuals struggling with eating disorders, depression and anxiety disorders.

Emotional and relational peace, joy, and power can feel impossible and elusive sometimes. But, often it takes one small first step to shift your life towards greater health. I love working with people ready to invite themselves to take that small step and see where it leads. If you've been struggling with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, relationship problems, upsetting personal experiences, or life transitions/losses, I hope you'll take the small step.

Are you a perfectionist? Do you have repeated distressing thoughts that are difficult to get rid of? Maybe you have flashbacks or triggers that stop you from doing what you once enjoyed? Hypervigilant and not feeling safe? Do you feel hollow, numb, or like you're going through the motions? High-functioning anxiety taking over? Or shame suffocating you? Maybe you've seen too much [it's just part of the job] and you find yourself thinking about it all the time? Talking may not be your thing, we can still process and reduce your symptoms.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
