I have a special interest in working with individuals who are looking to understand, challenge, and work through their past to help improve their present. I believe that in order to move forward, you must first understand what is holding you back and how to overcome those barriers. I challenge my clients to understand themselves from a place of compassion and responsibility so that they may move forward with the tools and skills they need to achieve the life that they want.

Trauma or life circumstances can disrupt multiple facets of life (e.g. career, family, education, self-esteem, self-identity, or a sense of security) which may be overwhelming and increases the risk of isolation, depression, anxiety, grief as well as detachment from the community. The space of therapy is a place for you to reconnect with a sense of self, happiness, feel safe, hope, and be comfortable in a place where all are accepted. Dr. Shelton is a clinical psychologist, born and raised in the Mahoning Valley. He has experience working in a variety of settings, including community mental health, behavioral schools, college counseling, outpatient clinics, inpatient hospitals and corrections. He enjoys working with a wide range of patient populations of all ages and demographics, providing individual, family, and couples psychotherapy. Over the course of his career, Dr. Shelton has worked with patients struggling with a multitude of concerns, including anxiety, depression, identity concerns, behavioral problems, schizophrenia, personality disorders and more.

I find passion in empowering others to help them develop skills in order to become the best person they can be. I believe in helping clients identify and use their strengths to help overcome difficulties, whether it is struggling with managing life stressors or chronic mental illness. I have provided counseling to children and adolescents with symptoms of anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, and ADHD. I enjoy working with clients in the LGBTQ+ population, and I also have had training in trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

Her specialty interests include: women’s, men’s, and gender issues; career development; addictions; and trauma. She integrates art therapy, positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), gestalt, and multicultural counseling into practice. She utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client.

Katherine “Katie” Kirkholder (pronouns: she/her) is an experienced clinical intern with CT status who works with adults, adolescents, and children. She is studying to become a licensed professional counselor and art therapist. Her specialty interests include: mood and personality disorders, depression, anxiety, coping skills, trauma, self-harm, girls’ and women’s issues, and overall health and wellness. She utilizes treatment approaches that are uniquely tailored to each client.

I am a trauma-informed therapist and I work with people of all ages who experience difficulties revolving around trauma, depression, anxiety, and adoption related issues. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents. My style is integrative and relaxed.

As a clinician, my ultimate goal for my clients is to make therapy more inviting and safe. I take a very relational approach, placing a high priority on building trust and rapport with my clients.
