In psychotherapy, the ground of being is typically taken to be the self (or ego), and the work of psychotherapy entails mending the fractured self, so that the self is more unified, whole, and complete. This is what we commonly call self-acceptance--acceptance of all the parts of our self, especially the more vulnerable and hurting parts we instinctively reject and ignore. Paradoxically, our suffering decreases when we are able to engage in the difficult practice of allowing vulnerable and hurting parts in, practicing holding them, and possibly relaxing, before we take our next step. Traditional psychotherapy tends to reach its limits here.
Relief from suffering that comes from unifying the self is real and considerable, but there is still a lot of unnecessary suffering that remains. Freud said, "much has been gained if we succeed in turning your hysterical [neurotic] misery into common unhappiness." Pain is unavoidable, but we don't have to stick with common unhappiness!
When the split between the self (the ego) and who we fundamentally are is realized, a deep sense of peace and wellbeing grows in the midst of ongoing, common, unhappiness. Through Western psychology, and Eastern meditative practices, I can help you heal your ego, and realize the stability and peace that lies beyond it.
