Holding space for people to experience connection and support as they grow, heal, or transition is what I love about this work. Whether it is a couple/relationship stuck in a pattern or longing for deeper connection, or an individual ready to make sense of things or move forward toward something new

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist dedicated to providing compassionate and supportive counseling/psychotherapy. I work with individuals both long and short term. Wanting to understand why adverse or difficult things happen to us is natural. When one can contribute a sense of meaning to a difficult situation the power of the problem is often integrated and diminishes. Therapy is a process that can help an individual find the transformational quality in their adverse experiences and become empowered by them, instead of overwhelmed by them.

Growing up in a dysfunctional family, being in a toxic or abusive relationship, or experiencing the horrors of a traumatic event can set you on a collision course with daily triggers to anger, sadness, overwhelm, panic, or dissociation. Maybe you notice your reactions in your relationships are causing harm, and you regularly experience the dreaded “shame spiral.” You minimize your pain, or others regularly do. If this is you, I’m glad you’re here. Long-term healing is possible. Even if only a small part of you hopes for change, I'm confident it's enough to start the journey toward a peaceful and thriving life.

It has been my experience that a person seeks therapy to obtain something, get better at something, or get rid of something. Whatever that ‘something’ is for you, let's get you there. Together we will explore your desired outcome for therapy, then we will work up a plan that research has proven to be effective and then tailor it to your unique self. So that at the end of your time in therapy you are able to walk away feeling, thinking, and doing better than when you started.

I trust that whatever appears in the mind, body, and emotions has its purpose and wants to be deeply heard, honored, understood, and embraced; that all the Psyche expresses are attempts toward our wholeness and realizing the jewel of our Essential Being. With this compassion and care, healing can unfold, patterns and beliefs transformed, and we can live our true potential and purpose, innate wisdom, and experience happiness, peace, and joy.

Everyone experiences stress, loss, hardship, and conflict within themselves or with others. And we can all relate to sometimes feeling stuck - aware that we want things to get better but we aren't sure where to begin, or we feel a bit confused about what is even wrong. Maybe you want to improve your relationships, or learn to better manage your stress. Maybe you have a sense that your past is negatively affecting you in the present. Maybe you wish you felt better about yourself and could reign in your inner critic. Or perhaps you are going through a major life transition and would like support navigating your new roles.

As queer and trans relationship therapist, I help my clients envision a culture of their relationship that honors their whole selves while building effective communication. This could include learning how to recognize and express needs for connection; navigating conflicts in a compassionate way; exploring boundaries for non-monogamous relationships; or re-establishing trust after conflicts. I specialize in working with people who live outside of the "norm," including queer, kinky and non-monogamous folks, from a non-judgmental and liberatory framework. You deserve to be respected and supported in your relationship journey.

My orientation to counseling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy is essentially a strengths perspective with a solution focus. The strengths perspective acknowledges all the strengths, resources and instinctual imperatives within an individual that have helped the individual get to the present moment. The strengths perspective helps me scan for the resources needed to resolve or modfy the treatment concern.

Neurodiverse clients I have worked with said they felt understood and supported and said that I genuinely care about them. I encourage neurodiverse communication styles, ways of thinking, and varieties of emotional expression. I will follow your lead on what you want out of therapy. The autistic community has a higher rate of trans and nonbinary gender identities which I celebrate. I also have a master’s degree in child development. I focused on sexual development and attachment theory. I support all sexualities and ethical relationship styles. I also studied healthy racial identity development in people of color and white people.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Portland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
