Parents of children with special needs and learning differences need support, advocacy, and connection. While single parents face overwhelming challenges alone, relationships also suffer as the family is impacted financially, emotionally, and socially, and the roles of husband and wife change. Family life can be overcome by the needs of the child; care for parents is critical as the needs of the child change and stages of development impact parental roles, quality of life, and family dynamics. Identifying and addressing concerns and problem areas early on increases the likelihood that they will be managed successfully.
My journey as a parent of a child with special needs and learning differences has fueled my desire to provide a safe space for parents to tell their stories, find connection, and be received with empathy and compassion. I will tell you that you can get through it, and you can begin to see your child and your experience with new eyes.
Together, we can distinguish thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can change for the better, and recognize where acceptance is appropriate. The fear associated with the anticipation of change is bigger than facing it head-on! I am aware of the courage required and the care parents provide, and I understand the need for advocacy, support, and connection.
