I was born in Nicaragua and came to the US as a young child, experiencing life as a first-generation Latino-American. Growing up, I didn't face significant culture shock like my parents and siblings. My main struggle was balancing Spanish and English, as I had to become fluent in English for school while maintaining my Nicaraguan culture and language, thanks to my supportive parents. I grew up in S. California, obtaining a BA degree in psychology from CSUN and a MA degree in psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara. For 14 years, I worked at Ventura County BH (VCBH), providing BH services for the severely mentally ill.
At VCBH, I conducted psychological assessments, triaged cases, and referred clients to appropriate care levels. Later, I worked at an outpatient adult clinic, offering individual therapy and leading therapy groups. My therapy style is eclectic, drawing from various theoretical models.
During my master's program, I focused on Carl Rogers' model, while at VCBH, I utilized a Cognitive Behavioral approach. In the trauma group, we employed the Seeking Safety treatment model. As a result, I integrate different modalities into therapy, predominantly based on CBT, to understand how our perceptions shape our emotions and behaviors.
