For the first 15 years of my career I also worked training doctoral students on how to be therapists while maintaining a private practice on the side. This has given me invaluable insight into the therapy work I do now in my full-time private practice.

As a licensed clinical social worker and mental health counselor, I have had experience working with many diverse groups of people. I am trained and experienced in treating those suffering from suicidal ideation, the effects of child welfare, and couples and individual counseling. I use CBT and short-term solution-focused therapies.

I specialize in working with families, children, adolescents, individuals and couples. I can help you explore and gain new coping skills to meet all of your goals. I am a part of Lake Aspen Group that has Psychiatrists, Therapists and ARNP Psych Nurses. We help individuals gain understanding and come up with solutions to gain control over most situations. I have experience working with teens, young adults, adults, couples and families. I have worked with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, life stressors, relationship problems, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.

Although I treat a variety of psychological conditions, I have three main specialty areas. First, I specialize in treating children and adolescents with emotional and/or behavior problems such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, poor school performance, non compliant behavior, substance abuse, and emotional trauma from domestic violence or sexual abuse. I also specialize in working with children, families, and adults who are struggling with issues related to divorce and re-marriage. My third specialty area is treating relationship and marital problems.

I provide two different but related services; counseling and forensic mental health evaluations. I see couples, individuals, families and children for a variety of issues including blended families, divorce, parenting issues and individual development. As a forensic evaluator, I work with the courts to provide expert testimony on cases concerning immigration, child custody, personal injury, risk for violence, and criminal cases. Both counseling services and forensic mental health evaluations are provided in Spanish.

Dr. Whitmer treats individuals, couples, and families. His doctoral training in clinical psychology has prepared him to treat many mental health disorders with various interventions. Dr. Whitmer is board certified as a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator and a Forensic Vocational Expert. He is nationally certified as Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and is International Psychometric Evaluation Certified. Dr. Whitmer is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State.
