The crux of my approach is simple, but versatile: I use anything and everything available to make breakthroughs possible. We all do better with an expansive toolkit. EMDR for "stuckness" / trauma and Gottman methods for couples to repair & connect. (Well worth YouTubing either for a sense of them.) Once we understand each other and you are insight-equipped, we'll put insight into action. But in ways that feel authentic to your personal experience of things. Clients often report that my approachable, humorous, "very human" style makes therapy a much more effective experience even when exploring difficult content.

Even when life is seemingly going well, our thoughts and feelings can make our days and nights a struggle. Living with mental illness or going through a challenging time can be like there is an ever-looming cloud blocking us from feeling the sun. It is my belief that therapy can help us see and feel the light again. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, behavioral or personality issues, and abuse & trauma can make us feel like we’re alone and without hope. Therapy can be a place where you don’t have to go through life’s struggles alone and get to learn coping strategies and solutions.

When therapy is most meaningful, it is most often the result of a strong and unique relationship between the client and the therapist. In order for such a relationship to develop, I take my time in getting to know my clients in an organic and natural manner. During early sessions, I will ask questions as necessary in order to get to know the person behind the client, but I work hard to get to know who people are on their own terms, and in their own time. Often clients will begin therapy with a pressing concern, and through the process of talking will uncover other concerns they were not aware were impacting life enjoyment.

My career as a therapist has afforded me opportunities to work with individuals from all walks of life. I immigrated to the United States from Kiev, Ukraine and feel intimately familiar with the challenges faced by all of the groups I mentioned. I am able to work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families and treat a wide variety of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, adjustment difficulties, grief / loss, relationship problems, family conflict, and addiction. I am proud member of Chicagoland’s Ukraine Community and am fluent in the Russian and Ukrainian languages.

My goal as a therapist is to try and help people see their circumstances, their world and maybe even themselves a little differently than before they walked through my door. I believe that therapy can be truly transformative when one is fully committed to the process, a commitment I try to support and encourage by establishing a relationship built on trust and respect. I primarily utilize family and individually focused therapy and employ the methods of ACT, DBT and CBT therapies in an effort to meet each individual where they are and make their introduction to the therapeutic process as seamless as possible.

I have extensive training working with individuals who struggle with a range of anxiety symptoms, and diagnoses especially trauma. In my years of practice, I have noticed that many clients lack trust in themselves and the ability to find a positive sense of self. People just want to understand themselves and become more comfortable with how they handle daily life stressors and others. To achieve this goal individuals need support with recognizing triggers and utilizing appropriate coping skills to reduce the negative responses to those triggers.

I am currently accepting new clients. I have experience working with individuals from different ethnic, socio-economic, religious, and spiritual backgrounds, who are experiencing a variety of life’s challenging situations. I am dedicated to working with each client to help resolve temporary and deep rooted issues. One of the most important relationships you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. I assist clients in gaining a deeper understanding of themselves, in order to move forward in their lives in a healthy and purposeful way. I am invested in treating the “whole” person with a focus on the mind body connection.

We all have rainy days. Likewise, we all have sunny days, cloudy days, and all other variations that enable us to live a fulfilled life. Yet for some of us, sometimes the 'not great' days last weeks, at times months, and even years. This makes life just that much harder to live. It makes relationships hard to make and keep, makes it difficult to succeed in school or work and impairs our ability to complete even the simplest of tasks. Currently sessions are conducted virtually- Dr. Waseberg is a psychotherapist and professor of counseling psychology. He digs deep into the roots of your underlying issues in a safe non-judgmental space with empathy. He has rich experience providing counseling in private practice settings as well as Inpatient Residential Treatment, Partial Hospitalization-PHP, and Intensive Outpatient-IOP settings.
