Are you a passionate and intuitive person? Do you often feel misunderstood by others? Do you find relationships to be exhausting and full of pain? I work with people of all ages who feel things in deeper, more intense ways, and have difficulties in finding the peace and joy they so desperately want. Clients have told me that I help them to feel comfortable, supported and validated during the process of healing and growth. I love helping clients improve their relationships, their self-image, and their ability to cope with and change emotional reactions.

I have worked with both adolescents and adults for 20 years in a variety of settings. The last ten years have been in private practice, but prior to that, I worked in psychiatric hospitals, group homes, and in the foster care/adoption system. www.austindbt.com

I specialize in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and you can read about it here www.austindbt.com DBT has been found to be an effective treatment for BPD, Depression, Anxiety, Substance Abuse, Disordered Eating, and Self Harm.

Candace Smith's Groups

Women DBT Group on Relationships

Relationships are often the source of pain, frustration and heartache, especially those with emotional sensitivity. This group is for women who want to change ineffective patterns in relationships while learning strategies to tolerate distress, rejection, frustration and anxiety. The group will help women learn ways to effectively communicate and regulate emotions when in distress; identify triggers and different ways to cope and respond; increase confidence and self-respect in relationships; learn ways to self-regulate and self-soothe, and how to decrease dependency on others.

Parent Group (of Teens and Young Adults)

This group is for parents of adolescents and young adults who have emotional and behavioral dysregulation difficulties. It is often very difficult to know how to deal with those who have strong emotional reactions, and how to most effectively respond, help and diffuse those situations. The group will help parents learn useful strategies and communication skills to prevent and/or de-escalate emotional charged interactions with their teens/young adults.

DBT Group for Adolescents

This is a DBT Skills Training Group for teens that meets weekly. The skills taught are designed to improve emotion regulation, coping and interpersonal skills, as well as to decrease problematic behavior (self harm, impulsivity, etc). I have been doing Adolescent DBT Groups for over 10 years, and love seeing how these skills and techniques help empower teens in feeling more in control of their moods and emotions.
