I am interested in working with someone who wants help. A person who wants to understand themselves better, who wants to change something in their life. I am excited to work with someone who is willing to be vulnerable and honest. The client should feel heard and understood after each session. The client should feel challenged to some degree, but also encouraged that they are doing the work. There should be a goal they are working towards, that we have agreed on together. They should feel a sense of motivation, investment, hope or progress after each session.
I like to start from where the client is, identify the issues that are most significant to the client, set our goals, build our plan together and do check ins at the beginning of each session. I utilize a combination of solution focused/task centered therapy with CBT along with language from motivational interviewing.
