It's really just so human to get tangled up in moods, emotions, unhelpful thoughts and self-sabotaging behaviors. This can stir shame, adding to the suffering. What's missing is self-compassion. Ironically, when we're more kind to ourselves, we're more able to act effectively. My interest is empowering folks to learn practical skills to manage unwanted patterns- and cultivate new ones. My approach often uses mindfulness to create a more spacious, patient response to moods, emotions and thoughts; and cognitive therapy as a pro-active way to re-program thinking and learn new coping skills, and helpful mind states such as curiosity.
A good start is to assess how well you understand the impact of your early life. It you've done previous therapy and have a good grasp on how your childhood shaped you, then we'll focus more on present-moment approaches: like mindfulness and forms of CBT-to cultivate new capacities and skills, to help you meet challenges with more resources and options.
Feel no shame if you are caught in mental loops you can't control and don't understand. The mind and nervous system come without a widget, yet they require regular tuning- that's therapy. Part of being a responsible adult is being willing to learn more about how your mind works, and how to make it work for you. The learning is rewarding, and can even be fun!
