Finding the right therapist is important. The fact that you're on this site shows that you may be searching for help or relief from everyday problems. In therapy, you can learn new and important things about yourself and others, identify and change negative behaviors or thoughts, and explore relationships. If you're a parent, maybe you're struggling with how to help your child who is experiencing difficulties with attention or organization at school, feelings of anxiety, worry or anger or doesn't know how to share painful memories.

I have been helping people make positive changes in their life since 1986. I work in a collaborative style that begins with creating a supportive therapeutic relationship. People need to feel safe in my office in order to make successful life changes. I don't rush the change process but act as a facilitator of personal growth.

Welcome! As an Integrative Psychotherapist, my passion lies in supporting individuals on their journey of reconnection with their most essential sense of self, living in alignment with their values, and feeling a deeper sense of belonging and peace in the world. I have an affinity for working with individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, abuse, or neglect, and attachment injury—which can manifest as low self-worth, limiting beliefs, codependency, a dysregulated nervous system, chronic health concerns, and relational challenges, among others.

If you want straight to the point, no bullshit, authentic, and kind, I am the therapist for you. I treat the military community, first responders, trauma, addiction, and other stressors that are holding you back from feeling like you are getting the most out of life. People who enjoy working with me are those looking to dig deep, talk about hard topics, be lovingly challenged from time to time, who want to live their lives with emotional freedom, and do all of this in a nonjudgmental space. My patients know that I am not interested in telling you what to do, judging, or coaching you how to live your life.

When we live a life of reflection, we open ourselves to the rich depths of life's possibilities. We move away from the needless suffering of unresolved pain. I help my clients examine the intricacies of their minds and relationships in a warm, supportive, nonjudgmental environment. I help them make sense of their lives and their histories to understand how they impact their current challenges. Together we build a refuge where strengths are discovered and life becomes more joyful. My training is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, however, my style always depends on the needs of my clients and the relationship we create.

You are probably reading this because you are experiencing some form of difficulty in your life, may it be loss or grief, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties or a general sense of low mood and anxiety, perhaps not even knowing why? Many people experience some form of disruption in their life, through which they can grow and develop more insight into whom they are, how they can resolve their issues and/or learn to tolerate living with them.

A necessary component of a rich and fulfilling life involves experiencing a full range of emotions. The pride of accomplishment, the sadness of loss, the security of trust and the pain when it is broken, the joy of love, and the disappointment of mistakes and missed opportunities all play an important role in our lives. We all deserve to appreciate our own successes and good fortunes, and to be able to grow through and from our misfortunes. We also all deserve help navigating through them. I began my career in the field in 2007 at an acute psychiatric hospital, primarily in the child/adolescent unit.

There are times in our lives when we all struggle with fear and pain of one kind or another. Contacting a therapist can be fear-provoking in and of itself. Whether we are struggling with acute trauma or simply feeling challenged by facets of everyday life, we all occasionally long for empathy and guidance. Loss, depression/anxiety, addiction, even normal life transitional issues can leave us feeling powerless, frightened and lonely. Often we hesitate to share these feelings with friends or loved ones for fear of being a burden or worse, being judged.

Hello! My name is Camille Canales, M.A., LMFT. I love to work with individuals on exploring what has impacted them in life leading them to becoming who they are today. I also love using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help individuals gain greater control of their thoughts. Lastly, I enjoy working with individuals on being present and feeling their emotions all the way through due to emotions having a large impact physiologically on the body. I'd also like to explore working with individuals who have fibromyalgia to see if Brain spotting can help diminish the pain they feel in their body.

On a daily basis I am given the distinct opportunity to work with people as a vehicle to help them to find their own truth and happiness. Based on our life's path we attach ourselves to people, places and things as a way to connect to the most basic part of ourselves, deserving and capable human beings. Sometimes these attachments result in being pushed further from our genuine selves and create patterns that leave us feeling lost and searching. I believe in the basic premise that at birth people are purely lovable and worthy and have a natural right to be seen and heard. My work with you is formed from this basic belief.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in California?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
