Although I don't know you yet, I do know some of your
pain
quite well.

Are you chronically ill and tired of educating your therapists about your medical conditions? If so, you're in the right place! I want to give you the care you deserve. I want to work with you on the unique challenges you might be facing, like navigating your transitioning experience, exploring sexual dynamics with partner(s), dealing with a new diagnosis, and needing an HRT or surgery letter. Healing from trauma, reclaiming power, growing from struggle and learning to work WITH emotions rather than AGAINST them are the goals I strive to support my clients in achieving. I want to help my clients move beyond simply not feeling so depressed, anxious, angry or manic. I want to help them transcend their
pain
, feel like they are fulfilling their purpose in life, are able to truly love themselves and are cultivating relationships that feed their soul. Narrative Therapy teaches my clients to transform the meaning of what they have been through and techniques from Existential Therapy help clients create or discover their purpose.

Hi! I'm Rebeks (they/them) - a transmasculine nonbinary therapist who specializes in trauma, LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy, and life with chronic
illness
, disability, college/academia, and affirmative approaches to neurodiversity such as Autism, ADHD, and OCD. I love working with folx in the "gray spaces" of identity who aren't quite sure they are (fill in the blank) enough. My approach to therapy is to provide solidity and a sense of containment to enable the deeper healing-work — especially for those with complex trauma, dissociation and early attachment ruptures.

People come to therapy with unique needs, concerns, and life circumstances. Through the process of self-inquiry, I help clients gain insight and develop effective coping skills to move through a challenge with greater ease and understanding. My therapeutic style is warm, compassionate and curious about one's experience. I use an attachment based, person-centered approach that offers individuals and couples clarity around repetitive patterns that cause
pain
, conflict, and limit growth.

Folks come to therapy for a variety of reasons that all boil down to change, whether they're struggling to handle it or make it. Many of my clients' lives don't align with societal norms, either intentionally coloring outside the lines or struggling to fit in. Folks may find themselves overwhelmed, dealing with big emotions, the effects of complex or single-event trauma, complex medical issues, or
chronic pain
. I am passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ - including trans kids and their families, disabled, and neurodiverse populations. I like to work with individuals, couples, polycules, and families of all shapes and sizes.

My practice specializes in serving those whose bodies have not historically felt like a resource; this can look like grappling with your relationship to or society’s relationship to: queerness & gender identity, burnout/overwork, sex/sexuality, messiness,
chronic pain
/
illness
, attachment patterns, relationship models/transitions, and oppression trauma.
Welcome! I'm shallyn. I’m a queer, non-binary somatic therapist. I work with adults, teens, and relationships. My approach is relational, somatic, collaborative, and contextualized. My hope is that the healing container we make together will be a space where you can start where you are (as the world’s expert of your own lived and felt experience); where you can notice and honor what your body is already doing to heal and protect itself; where you can exist beyond stifling binaries and norms in messy, unfolding relation to your body, yourself, your human and beyond human kin, and the natural and unnatural worlds you inhabit.

The difficulties of everyday life can sometimes become overwhelming. When on top of those difficulties we add the stresses of
illness
, anxiety, depression, our identity, our love lives and more-we can easily feel burdened to our breaking point. We just don't feel heard. Sometimes these situations can linger for months or years, making it hard to meet our obligations and live our lives in the way we would like. However, those difficulties and stresses don't need to define who we are-or where we're going. It's my goal as a therapist to help you tell your story.

Some days can be hard- working through
pain
usually is- and memories can be sharp.
I identify as Jewish, queer, and disabled. As a therapist, sometimes our personal identities are hidden from our clients as a way to protect ourselves and focus only on our clients. As someone that has multiple marginalized identities that impact their everyday life, I find it just as important to show up as I am as I hope all my clients can do when coming into session with me. Being informed about anti-Semitism, queerness, and disability justice is just one side of the story here- I live it.

We live in a hectic and chaotic world. Sometimes the tools we have just stop cutting it. Everything is suddenly a struggle. You may have been to a bunch of therapists and it didn't work. You may never have been to therapy and you just want to figure out how to feel better. You’re not alone, you’re not “crazy”. I can help. I'm a sex positive, trauma informed therapist with an impressive list of trainings and certifications, but more importantly, I'm an empathic person who's here to connect with you on a genuine and authentic level.

Queer, trans, nonbinary, & kinky folks to the front! Let's create a safe space for your difficult truths, unpopular opinions, and hot takes. Conflict doesn't have to be a source of disconnection. It can be a path to intimacy and solidarity. No matter your past or patterns, secure and compassionate relationships are possible and worth fighting for. I provide individual, couples, and relationship therapy that's holistic, sex positive, and trauma-informed. I’m especially passionate about supporting bisexual+, transgender, nonbinary folks, and others whose needs have been overlooked, ignored, and erased.

There is nothing wrong with the way your brain works. You're going to hate this, but the key to thriving as a neurodivergent person is practicing self-compassion and giving yourself permission to do things the way you need to. I don't blame you for trying to "fix" yourself - many well-intentioned therapists get a lot of things wrong about neurodiversity, so of course you would be confused. Sometimes you feel so smart and capable but other times you feel like you’re falling behind, and you might wonder if you even deserve to feel better.

Are you curious who you can trust with your fears and worries, or your hopes and dreams? Have you tried quitting/cutting back on those negative coping skills but seem to keep falling back into your old patterns? You might be wondering if there's someone out there who can celebrate you for being a little "outside the box". Maybe you’re in a consensual non-monogamous relationship, you identify as LBGTQIA2+ or you’re considering transitioning your gender or sexual orientation and you're wondering who you can trust to be affirming and knowledgeable. You deserve to be truly seen and celebrated for everything you bring to this world.

I am queer-affirming, trans-affirming, and neurodivergent-affirming. I also have familiarity with spiritual and religious trauma. Many of the people who consult with me identify as artists, writers, filmmakers, educators, activists, sex workers, queer, transgender, nonbinary, polyamorous/non-monogamous, or are living in resistance to social norms in one way or another. Problems can seem to take over our lives when we choose live near the edges of what's deemed "acceptable," "respectable," or even "healthy."

How can I find a therapist in California?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
