For over 20 years, I have worked as a full-time professor of marriage and family therapy at Chapman University. I love training students how to be therapists -- but I might love working with my own clients even more. I specialize in helping individuals who have experienced trauma, grief, and loss. I also help couples improve their relationship satisfaction, emotional connection, and recover from infidelity.

My approach to psychotherapy is grounded in a deep respect for the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Suffering is a uniquely individual experience. You may be feeling a profound sense of loneliness, unable to relate to others or finding difficulty fitting in. Perhaps depression and anxiety are preventing you from feeling fully engaged in important relationships or your relationships unravel. You may find it difficult to be kind or patient with yourself. I work with adult individuals and couples who are seeking help with relationship/intimacy issues, depression/anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma and loss.

I am a licensed therapist who is a compassionate and motivated individual with excellent listening skills, capable of quickly building rapport with clients. With over 12 years of experience, I have worked extensively with clients dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, and grief. I also have extensive experience with neurodivergent clients, such as those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Some clients are comfortable just being heard by their therapist, and others might seek a transformative process utilizing unique tools from specific modalities.

Everyone needs a safe place and an open non-judgmental environment to express needs, work through issues, and be validated as an individual. Relationships, personal and professional, can define us, support us, overwhelm us, and/or give meaning to our lives. A therapy session is a gift we give ourselves, one of the few times we have permission to elevate our own needs and, in so doing, heal ourselves.

Whether there's resurfacing trauma or you're in the process of revisiting identities and beliefs due to life transitions (such as break up, grief, career change, moving, and acculturation challenges), therapy can be a healing space to process how all those disruptions are impacting your sense of Self, and mood. You may find yourself occupied with maintaining life rather than fully living it; we’ll sit through hard-to-answer questions and I’ll invite you to cultivate awareness around your feelings and circumstances.

As a therapist I have witnessed healing and its splendor in the darkest of circumstances and am honored when individuals choose to embark on this journey with me. I know the decision to enter therapy is not always easy. Therapy is not easy. But therapy heals. When you enter therapy you put forth a willingness to acknowledge painful emotions and circumstances and a readiness to explore life events that are often uncomfortable, sometimes even paralyzing. But the insight and meaning you will gain from therapy will lead to transformation, comfort and growth.

I incorporate exploration of psycho-somatic connections, working through a variety of issues including grief, trauma, anxiety and life transitions.
Life experiences can impact us in surprising, often difficult, and even traumatic ways leaving us feeling out of touch with ourselves and those around us. We all have a desire to feel understood, and that journey often begins within ourselves. My goal in therapy is to create a space where you feel heard and safe while we explore deeper into who you are and begin to wrestle with the question “where do I go from here?”.

Feeling connected and comfortable with your therapist is an essential part of treatment and healing. Using a relational approach, I try to create an environment that helps people work on deeply personal and challenging issues. My particular areas of interest and experience include grief and loss, relationships, depression, anxiety, ADHD, adolescent and parenting issues, and identity/sexuality issues. I recently published my first book on sibling loss, "Surviving Sibling Loss: The Invisible Thread that Connects Us Through Life and Death." (Available on Amazon)

I also work adults who experienced the loss of a parent too early in their lives.
When you are suffering, it helps to have a support and guidance to find a new way forward. My clients find it easy to talk to me and feel understood. Healing happens within a safe space where you can speak openly about your pain and explore yourself deeply. Through this work new ways of being unfold. My training as a Jungian Psychoanalyst enables me to work closely with clients to explore dreams and creative images as well as their daily lives and history. I bring my full presence, sense of humor, intuition, and spiritual understanding to the therapeutic process.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
